Summary

Stardew Valleyplayers are pointing out the distinct similarities between Leah and Penny, two NPCs in the indie farming sim. It seems many fans of the game have difficulty telling the twoStardew Valleycharacters apart at times due to the similar nature of their faces and hair.

Stardew Valley’s NPCsmake up a big part of what makes the game so popular. In theory, a farmer could hardly ever leave their own property and barely see any NPCs, as they only very rarely make appearances uninvited. However, the community members all have their own stories to tell, and the player can make friends with them or even marry some. While all the NPCs are unique in terms of personality and story, their appearances are another matter.

Reddit user Solid-Astronaut4618 pointed out the strong resemblance between Leah and Penny.Leah, the local artist, andPenny, who teaches the few children in town, have no known relation to each other in the game. Leah is a relative newcomer toPelican Town, whereas Penny has lived there all her life, and no mention is ever made of them being of the same blood. However, it seems many players have difficulty telling them apart due to the general shape of their faces, their red hair, and the two both having 3/4 portraits.

Stardew Valley Players Get Confused by Similar NPCs

It seems that Solid-Astronaut4618 isn’t alone in their confusion, as many players have chimed in with similar difficulties. Multiple players mention accidentally mixing up the two so badly that they’ve mistakenly tried to romance both and only realized the difference when the “individual” was able to accept four presents instead of the usual limit of two over the course of the week. One player went so far as to overlay the portaits on top of each other, showing just how similar the two look beyond their hair color. Others suggested that withcarpenter Robinhaving a similar hair shade and face that she also generates confusion as to which is which.

Some have pointed out that prior to the creation ofStardew Valley, ConcernedApe wasn’t much of an artist, having taught himself everything he needed to create the game from the ground up. This could have resulted in the two characters looking overly similar to each other. However, it’s worth pointing out that in the early phases of the game, there were more distinct differences between Leah and Penny in appearance, and they only became more homogeneous as development went on.

While these similarities might be a bit of an issue for some fans, the vast majority don’t seem to have a problem with it. The similarity between the twoStardew Valleybachelorettesdoesn’t seem to have impacted the game’s extreme popularity over the years. With that said, it will be interesting to see if any other NPC commonalities pop up when the developer’s next game,Haunted Chocolatier, launches.
