Summary
The Boysis approaching the end of its legendary run, but that doesn’t mean fans are going to escape their Vought-mandated entertainment fix, as a highly sought development in the world ofThe Boyshas recently been confirmed to be happening.
The Boyshas been a massive success, garnering massive praise and a large fan base at a time when the superhero genre was coming off a high point to new lows. Serving as a critique and parody of the genre itself as well as contemporary issues, politics, corporatism, and more, the show has managed to strike a chord in many viewers, towing the line between gore-fest and laugh inducing moments perfectly. With this success came the announcement and eventual premiere ofGen V, a well-received spinoff thatshowrunner Eric Kripke assured fans would never be required viewing for the main show, despiteThe Boysentering its fifth and final season.
While its still up in the airwhether or notGen Vcould potentially go on afterThe Boysends, fans hoping for more content in that world are in for a treat. As reported first byDeadline, a new spinoff titledVought Risingis under development by Kripke and Paul Grellong. Set in the 1950’s, the series will follow a younger Soldier Boy and Clara Vought (the woman better known as Stormfront) on a murder mystery during the formative stages of the titular company. Jenson Ackles and Aya Cash are set to reprise their roles from the mainline series as the leads of Vought Rising, which was confirmed by the stars at the San Diego Comic Con Hall H presentation forThe Boysthat officially broke the news to fans.
In addition to the announcements concerningVought Rising, the presentation also premiered some clips from the upcoming second season ofGen Vto give fans a preview of what to expect. Of note from this segment is the addition ofThe Midnight Massstar Hamish Linklaterto the Gen V cast. Linklater, who is also set to play the voice role of Bruce Wayne inBatman: The Caped Crusader, will presumably join the rest of the cast as they return to Godolkin University. This return will be following the events of the season 4 finale ofThe Boys, which featured some members of the Gen V cast and also showed what many fans would agree should count assome of the worst things that Butcher has done in the series.
This new show is great news for fans, and the characters couldn’t have been better chosen. Soldier Boy was the highlight ofThe Boysthroughout the third season and is one ofthe strongest supes still on the table heading into season 5despite taking inspiration from possibly the most pathetic and inept hero in the original source material. Stormfront was similarly central to the show’s second season, and Cash managed to become a fan favorite despite playing a literal Nazi (her Jewish heritage helped a ton). These two characters have lived unnaturally long lives at their physical peaks and are assuredly a treasure trove of deep characterization and interesting adventures just waiting to happen. There might be some concern that, unlike the well-planned and highly acclaimedGen Vspinoff, Vought Rising is more of a reactive project taken up in light of the main series (and potentiallyGen V)wrapping soon. Only time will tell if this is the case, but for now, the team’s track record speaks for itself and fans can be optimistic about the overall quality of the show as it develops.
The Boys’showrunner already knows how it’s going to endand many fans might have their own predictions that might be true, especially as the narrative moves into the final season. However, the direction of a spin-off likeVought Risingis still quite ripe with potential and bound only by the canon of the mainline show, which doesn’t deal with the time period covered very thoroughly when at all. Fans can certainly expect something fresh and different when the series eventually launches on Prime Video.
