Summary
When a LEGOHorizonvideo game was first rumored back in May, many fans found the idea of a collaboration between the two a bit odd. While the LEGOHorizonTall Neck set is undoubtedly one of LEGO’s best gaming-related products, it didn’t do much to convince fans that an entire video game based on that crossover idea could work. But uponLEGO Horizon Adventures’announcement at Summer Game Fest, that concept felt a lot stronger, and the game’s initial previews further cemented that feeling.
LEGO Horizon Adventures' initial announcement was met with a strong wave of controversy, not for any content in the game itself, but for the platforms it’s releasing on.LEGO Horizon Adventuresis currently set to launch on PlayStation, PC via both Steam and the Epic Games Store, and even the Nintendo Switch. The only major platformLEGO Horizon Adventuresisn’t coming to is Xbox. Though normally fans wouldn’t expect a PlayStation first-party exclusive crossover to come to Xbox, the fact it’s the only platform missing from the launch line-up is a little strange. But Xbox might have the perfect competitor hiding right underneath its nose, in an idea that was scrapped over a decade ago.
A Canceled Halo Game Could Be The Perfect LEGO Horizon Adventures Competitor
The Canceled Halo Mega Bloks Game Explained
Back in January 2017, YouTube user PtoPOnline posted a video titled “Mega Bloks Halo: Unreleased by N-Space.” In this video, PtoPOnline’s presenter discusses a canceled Mega BloksHalogame that was initially in development from January 2013 to November 2013. Known internally as Project Haggar, thisHaloMega Bloks title was said to be a third-person shooter that played very similarly toTT Games' licensed LEGO video game series, where players would action-platform their way through various stages based on theHaloIP, while building turrets and other structures using real-world Mega Bloks parts.
Being treated as a AAA pitch, a lot of time and effort apparently went into making the initialHaloMega Bloks game’s vertical slice, which is where PtoPOnline’s footage came from. Unfortunately, theHaloMega Bloks game was canceledby the end of 2013, though the reasons behind its cancelation aren’t known. The primary developer working on Project Haggar, N-Space, eventually shut its doors in 2016.
LEGO Horizon Adventures Is Proving A Halo Mega Bloks Could Work
While fans still need to wait to see how it all shakes out in the end,LEGO Horizon Adventuresdoes look like a fun little departure forthe PlayStation-exclusive franchise. Much like Traveller’s Tales' LEGO games before it,LEGO Horizon Adventuresseems as though it’s injecting a lot of charm and humor into an otherwise fairly serious IP, and in the process showing a side of the franchise that’s never really been seen before.
TheHalofranchise could benefit from a similar approach. For a while now,Halofans have wanted a bit more diversity when it comes to gameplay and tone intheHalofranchise. Based on the brief early-build footage ofHaloMega Bloks, it seemed as though the game was going to offer a fun spin-off similar in tone toLEGO Horizon, with one short cinematic showing a Hunter accidentally stepping on a Grunt and trying to wipe it off his boot. TheHaloMega Bloks game’s environments were also very bright and colorful, and that’s something that could contrastHalo Infinite’s aesthetic well. A revivedHaloMega Bloks game would also bring a new generation of fans on board, something that definitely wouldn’t hurt theHalobrand right now.
