Remedy Entertainment’s Connected Universe is transcending beyond video game medium, as film and television adaptations of theAlan WakeandControlfranchises are currently in the works from a highly reputable production company.
Leading up toAlan Wake’s launch was a live-action web-series prequel titledBright Fallsand would serve as the foundation for Remedy’s measured implementation of the format into subsequent titles, a trademark that further entertained the discussion ofhow these games would be adapted to the silver screen.
In a statement released by Remedy, the studio announced a partnership with Annapurna Pictures to bringAlan WakeandControlto film and television. The deal notes that Annapurna “will finance 50% of the development budget for the upcomingControl 2video game and gain the rights to expand the award-winningControlandAlan Wakefranchises into film and television,” while Remedy will retain total IP rights for each franchise. “The future of storytelling requires seamlessly integrating gaming, film, and television, and this partnership will allow us to explore new ways of bringing these narratives to life,” said Annapurna’s founder and CEO, Megan Ellison. “This agreement will ensure we can developControl 2into the best game possible, allow us to move into self-publishing for selected titles and expand our franchises to other mediums,” said Tero Virtala, Remedy Entertainment’s CEO.
Annapurna Pictures has cultivated an esteemed filmographyunder its belt, having produced acclaimed films likeZero Dark Thirty,Her, andIf Beale Street Could Talk. Finnish game development studioRemedy Entertainmenthas carved their own path within the medium, beginning with 2001’sMax Payne.The game has left an undeniable markon the industry for its deeply faceted narrative – a signature trait that would come to define the studio’s future releases – and innovative gunplay, setting in motion two sequels and several new franchises that would innovate in their own manner.Alan Wakelaunched in 2010 and followed the titular novelist in his fight to unravel the mystery behind his wife’s abrupt disappearance in the Pacific Northwest, only to be further challenged by a manuscript he had no recollection of writing coming true.
