Summary
Disney’s recent announcement promising the expansion of Avengers Campus in Disney’s California Adventure comes at the cost of the famous Red Car Trolley barn, and guests aren’t happy to see the attraction go. After the success of Avengers Campus,Disneyannounced the addition of two new rides for the Marvel franchise, Avengers Infinity Defense and Stark Flight Lab. Both will begin construction in 2025, and while not much is known yet about the rides themselves, it is apparent that the construction of the rides will involve the removal of some other parts of the park. The expansion was announced at D23, but Disney only recently mentioned the removal of the trolley barn.
The Red Car Trolley barn has been a part of Disney’s California Adventure since July 2012 as a piece of Buena Vista Street. It runs from the front of the park to various rides, similar to the vehicles on Main Street in Disney World. The trolley was part of a renovation that transformed Sunshine Plaza to Buena Vista Street, a reminder of what California was like when Walt Disney first moved there. Unfortunately, when it was originally added to the park, some guests were unsatisfied with the California theme. In comparison, expansions like Avengers Campus andsuperhero franchises like X-Menhave seen great success among fans over the last few years.
Journalist Scott Gustinsaid on Twitter that the trolley barn is being removed to expand Avengers Campus. Avengers Campus has been a popular part of the theme park, includingspecial features in the past like Rogers: The Musical. Due to the addition of the new rides, the backstage space used for the trolley barn will be needed for the Avengers Campus expansion. When asked if the Red Car Trolley barn would return at a later date, Disneyland officials said more information would be shared in the future. So there may be a chance that the trolley attraction will return down the line after the construction of Avengers Campus. For now, it will close sometime in 2025.
Guests React to The Removal of the Red Car Trolley Barn
The announcement upset a number of guests who did enjoy the trolley, many of whom now question if it would return. While guests disliked the original opening, the trolley has become a big part of the entrance to the park, and many are sad to hear that it’s leaving, even if it’s for anexpansion of Avengers Campus. There haven’t been any further announcements since the backlash after Gustin broke the news.
The Disney parks are always changing. Disney has made updates to many other attractions lately, like the changes to thePeter Pan ride in Disney World. However, the trolley seemed to have a much bigger fanbase of devoted guests who enjoyed the sight on Buena Vista Street thanDisneythought. Hopefully, Disney will make a compromise and the attraction could return in some regard once Avengers Campus is done. Guests will have to wait and see for further announcements about how the execution of these projects will influence the parks.
