Summary
One ofBatman’snemesis is making a comeback inJoker 2. The latest trailer ofJoker: Folie á Deuxrevealed that Harvey Dent, also known as Two-Face, would appear in the 2019Jokersequel.
Two-Face has had numerous encounters withJokerin the comics. Joker is the first supervillain whom Two-Face met inBatman #258and the first he teamed up with inThe Brave and the Bold #129-130. They were also seen together in the 2008 movieThe Dark Knight, the second installment in Christopher Nolan’sThe Darktrilogy.Batman fans who want to see the two villains together could potentially see a reunion inJoker: Folie á Deux.
Warner Bros. dropped anew trailerfor theanticipatedJokersequelstarring Joaquin Phoenix on Tuesday. In the teaser, Arthur Fleck, aka Joker, is being transported in a van while the driver listens to the radio. The news talks about Arthur’s legal battle, calling it the “trial of the century.” Then, a voice says, “They believe Arthur Fleck to be some kind of martyr. Well, he’s not. He’s a monster.” Arthur starts laughing hysterically, his typical reaction when he is upset or stressed out.Collidernotes that while it appears to be a throwaway line from a random radio host, if one activates the subtitle, the caption reveals that the line is from Harvey, a famous Gotham district attorney who later became Two-Face. Based on Harvey’s brief appearance in the trailer, he is still in his district attorney era as he speaks to the people of Gotham and not theterrifying villain, Two-Face.
Some fans also noticed the subtle hint pointing to Harvey in the subtitles, which elevated excitement about the movie. One commented, “The subtitles say Harvey Dent is the guy speaking on the radio in the beginning. This is going to be good.” Another wrote, “If you turn on the subtitle, you’ll see that Harvey Dent is speaking at the beginning of the trailer.” Many didn’t notice it because they didn’t enable the subtitle, so they were shocked after reading the other comments and were pleased to confirm it. “[G]reat eye, that detail and your comment made my day,” a different fan said. Many said it was a “good catch.” However, Warner Bros. may have realized that many got the clue as they seemingly disabled the subtitles. Another user jokingly blamed those wholeaked the Harvey Dent spoilerto others after realizing that the subtitles were no longer accessible, “Now the subtitles are disabled, look what you’ve done.”
It remains unclear howJoker 2will portray Harvey’s return to the big screen. However, he will definitely make an appearance aside from the voice Arthur heard on the radio, as shown in the trailer. Harry Lawtey was added to the cast ofJoker: Folie à Deuxin a reportedly notable role. There are no other details about Lawtey’s character, but some outlets already reported that he was cast to play Harvey, the prosecutor in Arthur’s trial. Warner Bros. is keen to keep the plot of the movie under wraps, and they are successful in doing so, as fans are in the dark about what to expect in the film. While Harvey is obviously still the District Attorney in the trailer, many are expecting to see his transition into Two-Face and see him work alongside Joker in the movie.
Two-Face and Joker have a complex relationship because they have different principles, but they find themselves working together againstBatman. They are often in alliance just as much as they find themselves in argument. In theirhospital scene inThe Dark Knight, Joker manipulated Harvey to believe he had nothing to do with his and Rachel’s abduction, which led to the latter’s death and the former burning half his face. Harvey argued that the men who captured them were working for Joker and that it was his plan, but the latter only said, “Do I really look like a guy with a plan?” Joker also insisted that he wasn’t a schemer and eventually handed Harvey a gun, challenging him to shoot him, so everything would be chaotic. Apparently, Joker wanted to corrupt Harvey, whom Batman believed was Gotham’s legitimate protector. Harvey turned to his double-headed coin to decide whether to kill Joker, but the scene ended with Joker blowing up the whole Gotham General Hospital. Harvey presumably escaped and re-invented himself as Two-Face. It will be a great treat for fans tosee Two-Face and Joker in a scenesimilar to their confrontation in the hospital. Well, fans should wait and see what’s in store for Harvey, aka Two-Face, inJoker 2.
