Summary
Black Myth: Wukong’s combat is one of the game’s standout features, delivering intense, fast-paced combos combined with the incredible agility of the Destined One, all topped off with an array of unique and powerful spells, transformations, and spirit attacks. Besides the temporary transformations, combat spells are divided into three categories: Strand, Mysticism, and Alteration. Each requires its own slot, meaning players can only have one active spell from each category at a time andmust visit a Shrine to switch their active spells.
One of the best aspects of spells inBlack Myth: Wukongis how easy they are to use. They can be upgraded to increase their power and are highly versatile — often serving both as offensive, damage-dealing magic or as defensive spells to give players a breather and allow them to plan their next move. On top of that, players canfreely respec their allocated skillpointsto upgrade and try out a new spell. Let’s rank all the combat spells players can unlock in the game (excluding Transformations) to determine which are the best spells inBlack Myth: Wukong.
7Life-Saving Strand
Exclusive Passive Spell For NG+ Run
Life-Saving Strand is the only spell that players won’t unlock until after completingBlack Myth: Wukongfor the first time. When starting a New Game Plus run, after reaching the first Shrine in Chapter 1, players will receive the Life-Saving Strand skill. As the name suggests, this belongs to the Strand skill category, meaning players will need to choose between Life-Saving Strand and A Pluck of Many, equipping one of them in the available slot.
Life-Saving Strand is also the only passive spell inBlack Myth: Wukongthat players cannot manually activate. Instead, it automatically triggers when the player’s health drops to zero, reviving the Destined One with full health. However, it doesn’t replenish other resources like Gourd or Mana and has a 600-second cooldown, allowing players to be revived just once during an intense boss fight. While an extra life can be helpful in challenging encounters, the passive nature of this spell, along with its unlock requirements, places Life-Saving Strand lower in the rankings of the spells available inBlack Myth: Wukong.
6Ring Of Fire
Defensive Spell For Careful Players Who Value Survivability
Ring of Fire is a Mysticism defensive spell that gives the Destined One a moment of respite during tough battles. Upon activation, it creates a protective ring on the ground, making the player highly resistant to both regular and elemental damage. In addition, Ring of Fire boosts recovery and enhances the effects of consumables. The best strategy is to activate it when low on health, stay inside the ring, and use a Gourd or medicine. Since Ring of Fire remains active for a while, players can retreat into the ring when things get tough to benefit from its effects. While useful, this spell isn’t as powerful as other Mysticism spells inBlack Myth: Wukong, so it might be better to allocate the slot for something else.
Players can obtain Ring of Fire in Chapter 3, in the Temple Courtyard, after defeating the Macaque Chief for the second time. After the fight, speak to the NPC there to trigger a cutscene and receive the spell.
5Spell Binder
Great Spell For Players Ready To Go Fist To Fist With Their Foes
Spell Binder is a unique offensive Mysticism spell in the Destined One’s arsenal, particularly valuable in situations where Immobilize or other offensive spells fall short due to certain bosses' resistance to spell effects. In these cases, Spell Binder is invaluable, as it significantly boosts attack power upon activation, making it easier to defeat such foes. When upgraded, this spell also removes all negative effects and restores Health. However, while Spell Binder is active, players are unable to use any other spell, vessel, or transformation, and lose all their Mana. Due to its passive nature, which simply boosts the Destined One’s attack, Spell Binder isn’t the most engaging or fun-to-use spell inBlack Myth: Wukongeither.
Players can obtain Spell Binder during Chapter 3, as a reward for completing the Treasure Hunter Quest and defeating the Green-Capped Martialist boss.
4Rock Solid
Black Myth’s Alternative To Parrying Mechanics That’s Hard To Master
Rock Solid is an impressive Alteration spell inBlack Myth: Wukongthatfunctions as an alternative to parrying, though it can be difficult to master. When activated, the Destined One transforms into a rock, which can completely negate the damage of an incoming attack, deflect it, and stagger the opponent, leaving them open for a counterattack. Timing is crucial for using this spell effectively, so it requires practice. One of the advantages of Rock Solid is its quick cooldown and low mana cost, allowing players to use it frequently during difficult encounters. Furthermore, certain armor sets and curios (amulets) can make Rock Solid even more powerful, enhancing its potential and sometimes allowing players to cast it for free.
The Rock Solid spell is acquired in Chapter 2 at the Crouching Tiger Temple, after defeating the challenging Tiger Vanguard boss, who uses the same spell against the Destined One.
3Cloud Step
Powerful Spell For Evading, Attacking, Or Interrupting
Cloud Step is the second Alteration spell in the game, and many players might prefer it over Rock Solid due to its ease of use and effectiveness. Upon activation, the Destined One leaves a decoy to distract enemies, quickly evades to a safe distance, becomes invisible, and moves with increased speed. Afterward, players can deliver a powerful surprise attack with enhanced damage and a higher critical hit chance, often interrupting and staggering enemies. The longer players remain invisible, the more lethal their strike will be. This combination of defensive and offensive capabilities, along with its low cost, makes Cloud Step a highly versatile skill inBlack Myth: Wukong.
Cloud Step is acquired in Chapter 1 as a reward fordefeating the Black Wind King bossin Black Wind Cave. Be cautious, as the boss will use this spell against the Destined One.
2A Pluck Of Many
Get A Numerical Advantage For Dealing Massive Damage
A Pluck of Many is one of the best and most enjoyable spells inBlack Myth: Wukong. It allows players to quickly deal significant damage to bosses while also providing an opportunity to heal or plan their next move. Upon activation, the Destined One summons four duplicates (the number can be increased with upgrades) that independently attack the boss, surrounding and interrupting them. As the skill is upgraded, not only does the number of duplicates increase, but their abilities also improve, allowing them to use their own spells during attacks.
While A Pluck of Many is undoubtedly one of the strongest offensive spells in the game, it comes at a high cost and has a long casting time, so players must be careful to avoid being interrupted during the process. Additionally, the AI controlling the duplicates can be unreliable at times, with some freezing in place instead of attacking. Moreover, not every boss is easily distracted by duplicates; some will continue to target the Destined One unless the player maintains distance. To unlock this spell, players must defeat the Tiger Vanguard boss at the Crouching Tiger Temple in Chapter 2 and then discover a hidden passage beneath a pool of blood.
1Immobilize
Fun, Reliable, And Versatile
Immobilize is the first spell players obtain inBlack Myth: Wukong, and arguably the best in the game. Simple to use, highly effective against most bosses, and extremely versatile, it works equally well for both offensive and defensive strategies. As a Mysticism control spell, Immobilize binds enemies in place with just a gesture from the Destined One’s finger. The spell triggers almost instantly, freezing enemies in their tracks, increasing the damage they take, and offering a much-needed breather during intense fights — perfect for taking a sip from a Gourd or using special medicine. It’s difficult to swap Immobilize for another Mysticism spell, except in rare instances where stronger enemies break free too quickly.
Players acquire Immobilize at the beginning of Chapter 1 during the mandatory Bullguard boss fight, gifted by the Keeper of Black Wind Mountain. With a few upgrades, this spell gives players the upper hand throughout the game, allowing them to control the flow of battle and interrupt enemies at critical moments.
