Asta has come a long way from the Forsaken Realm, where he had no magic powers. With grimoire in hand, Asta now has the ability to use Anti-Magic, making him a formidable foe and a force to be reckoned with in a world controlled by magic.
However, Asta had yet to make full use of these abilities. Near the beginning of theSpade Kingdom Raid arc, Asta gains the ability to use Devil Union and learns a little more about the Devil inhabiting his grimoire. What is Asta’s Devil Union?
Devil Union is the process in which Asta can fully use a Devil’s power.As a Devil Hostor Devil possessed, Asta can unite his powers with Liebe, his adoptive brother, a Devil who had been sealed into his Five-Leaf grimoire. Previously,Asta could use Liebe’s Anti-Magicabilities as he had been living in his grimoire and had bargained with Liebe to gain more power during his battles.
For a Devil Host to use this ability, they have to undergo a ritual called Devil-Binding. The preparations for this ritual require the Devil Host to make the Devil submit; this will complete the preparations, and thus, the Devil Host will be able to form a contract with said Devil. This type of contract will allow the Devil Host to have a position of total dominance over the Devil and essentially turn the Devil into their servant.
However, this is only if the contract is that of a master and servant. During this type of contract, the Devil will serve as a familiar, obeying all the orders the master gives them while also observing any prior rules the Devil Host has set. In this type of contract, the Devil Host can become the ultimate warrior,as Nacht mentionsin Chapter 270.
However, this is not the contract Asta and Liebe have formed. Asta and Liebe have an equal contract; however, this type of contract would mean the Devil would have no guarantee of listening to its Host. In Chapter 270, Nacht also mentioned that there is no merit to this kind of contract, likely because the Devil Host and Devil will need to be on equal footing to use Devil Union. We see this synchronization in Chapter 272 when Asta and Liebe use Devil Union for a second.
Additionally, when Devil Union is in use, the Devil Host will acquire the physical traits of their Devil. These can include wings, horns, a pointed tail, and eye slits to signal Devil Union is in use. In Asta’s situation, he also gains the use of his right arm once he completes the ritual for Devil Union.

As mentioned above, Asta will have access to all of Liebe’s abilities once Asta has completed the Devil-Binding ritual and formed a contract with Liebe. Once Asta uses Devil Union, he will take on the physical traits of Liebe; these include large wings, eye slits, and a long pointed tail.
When Asta uses this ability, his physical skills and abilities greatly increase. Before the one-year and three-month time skip, Asta could use Devil Union for 5 minutes. Asta can use a partial percentage of Devil Union to compensate for this weakness. Thanks to this solution and the limitation of the release of Anti-Magic, Asta is thus able to extend the duration of this form to ten minutes. Instead of coating his entire body in Anti-Magic, Asta can choose a single point, such as his arm, to condense this ability.
