Summary
Asta and Yuno had the same upbringing inBlack Clover, yet as they mature, key differences in their heritage will either hinder or accelerate them to their goal ofbecoming the next Wizard King. Yuno has been blessed by mana and given two grimoires with two different types of magic powers and an elemental spirit, which gives him a clear advantage.
Whereas Asta had to train his body to compensate for his lack of mana, this allowed him to fight efficiently in close-up battles. These two rivals have been given a stark contrast in how they walk their path to becoming the next Wizard King, so how do they parallel one another?
They Were Both Abandoned For Different Reasons
Asta and Yuno both started at the same place but arrived at different paths
There are a few ways in which Asta and Yuno parallel one another. While both strive to become the most powerful Wizard in the Clover Kingdom, the Wizard King, they start an unfortunate path. Asta and Yuno were both abandoned as babies at the Hage Church orphanage in the Forsaken Realm.
Despite their upbringing in a poor realm, the two foster brothers saw themselves as rivals and friends to become the next Wizard King. Unfortunately, Asta was born without any mana or magic powers, whereas Yuno always showcased incredible magic powers from a young age. Although Asta was at a clear disadvantage compared to Yuno, they both worked hard to make it to the top of their goal.
This is also where the differences between the two begin to show. Asta was abandoned to preserve his life, as his mother, Licita, could drain the mana and life force of whatever was near her. To protect Asta, she abandoned him at the Church. On the other hand, Yuno was abandoned to protect his life from the Dark Triad during the fall of Grinberryall House in the Spade Kingdom. So, while the two are on similar paths, unfortunately, Asta’s mother is no longer alive after saving Liebe from Lucifero. However, in Chapter 331, it is revealed thatCiel Grinberryall had survived and had reunited with Yuno.
Yuno Is Of Royal Blood While Asta is Low-born
Yuno could become the next King of the Spade Kingdom, whereas Asta would remain a peasant
As mentioned above, Yuno is of royal blood as he hails from the Spade Kingdom’s Grinberryall House. As a result of this revelation, Yuno’s astronomical feats, showcasing his magic power, are now made clear. InBlack Clover, individuals with royal blood have great mana and magic powers, whereas those who are peasants have low magic capabilities.
This is another parallel between the two. Although Asta and Yuno are working toward becoming the next Wizard King, Yuno is set to inherit the throne in the Spade Kingdom as the next King. However, although Asta is a commoner and a peasant, he will not be royalty; instead, he will be the Wizard King who protects the Kingdom from disaster, as the Clover Kingdom already has its own royal bloodline after the first Wizard King.
Once again, this shows the differences between the two. Asta essentially had to work hard for everything he has; the series consistently depicts Asta training in various ways, whether with the Magic Knights or individual training. Overall, Asta has to work hard to prove himself to others and showcase his reliability. However, Yuno could be seen gaining everything without trying too hard; that’s not to say Yuno didn’t work hard. However, it does show that Yuno gains the respect and authority from others more easily, although he does face classism from his peers in the Golden Dawn squad.
Yuno Is Loved By Magic Whereas Asta Has None
In a world full of magic and mana, Asta does his best to prevail
One thing that has always been consistently shown is the magic difference between Asta and Yuno. Yuno has always been showcased with incredible magic abilities, from his powerful wind magic to gaining a wind elemental spirit that he calls Bell. Additionally, Yuno received a Four-Leaf clover grimoire, one of the most powerful grimoires that can be obtained in the Clover Kingdom. A Four-Leaf clover grimoire is also known to bring the user good luck.Yuno also received an additional grimoirein the Spade Kingdom, which is originally his, as he is found to use Star Magic.
In contrast, Asta still has no magic powers and cannot use any magic abilities. Asta’s Anti-magic was given to him by Liebe, who dwelled in his Five-Leaf clover grimoire. While Asta may not have any complex magic spells,he does obtain new Anti-Magic swords, each with its own uses. This clearly showcases how Yuno is loved by mana, whereas Asta is not.
Yuno Has An Elemental Spirit Whereas Asta Has A Devil
Two rare forms of magic, one proving your strength and the other taboo
Spirit Magic is a rare form of magic that few individuals can use. This magic requires the user to summon an elemental spirit and use their abilities. However, these elemental spiritsonly seek out those worthy of their power. As we’ve seen in the anime, only royalty members can contract with these elemental spirits, such as Fuegoleon Vermillion, who hosts the Salamander, and Lolopechka and Noelle, who can host Undine.
As mentioned above, Yuno has contracted with the elemental wind spirit Bell, who takes note of his magic power and can sense Yuno’s undiscovered magic abilities. While Asta could easily use his Anti-Magic skills, he was unaware of the Devil that dwelled within his grimoire. Yuno obtained Bell’s scroll in Episode 18 of the anime, whereas Asta would often bargain with Liebe to gain more power.
The difference is thatBell or Sylph eagerly wanted a contractwith Yuno after their first meeting. Although Asta had Anti-Magic abilities, this power was still out of his grasp. It was only in Episode 170 that Asta could gain the full use of Liebe and his Anti-Magic abilities and use Devil Union to fight.
Overall, Yuno could be seen given the silver spoon and often handed new abilities and grimoires when he needed them. While there’s no doubt Yuno also worked and trained to use these abilities fully, as seen in Episode 170, Asta is truly the definition of hard work. As a result, each time a new enemy emerged, Asta would be taken away for more training, especially in the case of Arc 11, where Asta was teleported to Hino Country and learned how to use his Ki abilities properly. While the two are both on the same path of wanting to become the next Wizard King, Yuno is the rival blessed by mana, pushing Asta to surpass his limits as they each walk different paths to their goal.
