Summary
Sister Lily, or Lily Aquaria, could be seen as a background character who helped shape Asta and Yuno’s development during their time in the orphanage Church in Hage village inBlack Clover, but this nun has been turned into aDevil’s Host in Arc 11. However, though seen as a potential love interest for Asta, Sister Lily takes a step back regarding screen time in the series.
After the Spade Kingdom Raid Arc ofBlack Clover, Sister Lily was given a more crucial role in the series, becoming more powerful as a Paladin and, in turn, sending Asta away to become more powerful to take on the newest threat to the Kingdom.

After the battle with theZogratis siblings during the Spade Kingdom Raid, the Clover Kingdom held an awarding ceremony for Asta, who became aSenior Magic Knight, First Class, one year and three months after the battle. Now that Asta has turned 18, at his awarding ceremony, he proposes one final time to Sister Lily. However, this moment was interrupted by Lucius Zogratis, who introduced himself as the “Savior of this World.”
In Chapter 334, Lucius reveals that his magic is Soul Magic; thus, he can transform the soul of any person he touches. He also reveals that the soul is the source of a human’s life, mind, and magic. With this ability, Lucius turned Sister Lily into his faithful servant, altering her mindset to do his bidding loyally.
In Chapter 335, Lucius also revealed that he took control of the remaining supreme Devils in the world. With his Soul Magic, he incarnated and purified the Devil Beelzebub into Sister Lily with this magic ability.
What are the Paladins?
The Paladins are a new threat, however, to the entire world
Sister Lily was the first Paladin created by Lucius Zogratis. As mentioned above, Lucius can incarnate and purify Devils with his magic ability. By using the Devils, Lucius believes humanity will ascend to new higher life forms with invincible bodies and boundless wisdom.
Consequently, Lucius intends to have the Paladins fight on behalf of the world as these higher beings. As Lucius created them, they followed his beck and call faithfully, living to fulfill his demands under the notion of “World Peace.”
However, it is possible to rationalize with them, as seen in Chapter 349, when Asta is able to learn Sister Lily’s true feelings during battle. When Lucius created the Paladins, he ingrained into their souls that he is righteous. As a result, while they continue to follow his orders, they retain their original personalities. This is why Sister Lily cries when she says she does not want to kill Asta; however, she is compelled to follow Lucius’s orders.
Who is Sister Lily?

Lily Aquaria, or Sister Lily, was previously a noblewoman who lived in the Noble Realm in the Clover Kingdom. Sister Lily was troubled by how the Noble Realm discriminated against those with less magic power. As a result, Sister Lily became a Nun and entered the Church, believing their purpose was to bring peace and equality to the people.
However, upon entering the Church, she found that they, too, discriminated against and held prejudice against those with little magic power. It was after this that Sister Lily ran away to the Forsaken Realm and served as an additional caretaker in the orphanage Church in Hage village alongside Father Orsi. This is where Sister Lily met Asta and Yuno.
In addition, Sister Lily is Asta’s love interest. Throughout the series, Asta professes his love to Sister Lily at various ages. Unfortunately for Asta, Sister Lily always rejected his proposal. After becoming aMagic Knight and joining the Black Bulls, Asta would send the Church a portion of his monthly wages, partly to help the other children and likely to show what kind of provider he is to Sister Lily.
However, after the Spade Kingdom Raid, Asta proposed one final time after he turned 18. Once again, Sister Lily rejected his proposal; however, given the seriousness of the situation, she could see how much Asta had grown after he left Hage village. Unfortunately for Asta, Sister Lily sees him as family, given that she looked after him when he was younger.
What are Sister Lily’s magic abilities?
As a noblewoman, she’s even more powerful as a Paladin
Like many others, Sister Lily also possesses agrimoire and can control Water Magic. As a Nun, Sister Lily can use healing magic and attacking magic, as seen in the first episode of the anime.
However, after Lucius turns Sister Lily into a Paladin, she can also use Spatial Magic because she has the incarnated and purified Devil Beelzebub within her. Spatial Magic is the ability to manipulate space and is considered a rare form of magic. Users of this type of magic are typically noblemen and women who showcase an incredible aptitude for magic power.
With these two types of magic, Sister Lily, as a Paladin, can use Spatial and Water Magic to attack her enemies, as seen during the battle in Hino Country. However, after Asta broke Sister Lily’s curse with his Anti-Magic, it’s unclear whether Sister Lily still possesses Spatial Magic.
