Summary

2014’sTales from the Borderlandssaw thefranchise stretch its legs beyond the core looter shooter titles and into other genres with Telltale Games' take on Gearbox Software’s satirical sci-fi universe.Tales from the Borderlandsintroduced a self-contained adventure with endearing characters and some great guest appearances from longtime favorites. While the series is no stranger to side content and spin-offs, with a feature film now under its belt,Talesfound a place in many fans' hearts as an excellent entry that showed a different side of the world in interesting ways while still retaining what makesBorderlandsdistinct and relatable.

Borderlands 4is stated to be “in active development” but there are still no other firm updates or a possible release window yet. Fans may thus be looking for more content to check out until then, and theBorderlands: Debt or Alivenovel penned by Anthony Burch, who was lead writer forBorderlands 2and its DLCs, was recently released. However, asDebt or Aliveis a direct sequel, picking up right afterTalesto close out the story of its cast, this means that it is now highly unlikely they will return in another game.

Borderlands: Debt or Alive Likely Means No Future Tales From The Borderlands Games

Tales from the Borderlands was One of the Franchises' Best Adventures

Telltale’s namesake and reputation suited the title perfectly, as it presented the world through a much different genre, but with all theBorderlandshumor and other aspects integrated in a believable way that made for a fun and authentic experience. Set following the events ofBorderlands 2,Tales from the Borderlandscenters on the trio ofSasha, Fiona, and Rhysattempting to swindle their way into obtaining a Vault Key. As a slower-paced narrative interlaced with Telltale’s distinct dialogue choices,Taleswas able to give the setting and characters a bit more breathing room, filling out lore and showing the experience of characters who aren’t traditional Vault Hunters, but who fit right intoBorderlands. Its 5 episodes added up to an enjoyable and memorable story in the world.

Gearbox itself then returned to development dutiesonNew Tales from the Borderlands, which saw another ragtag collection of eclectic characters teaming up to take down theCEO of one ofBorderlands' arms corporationsin a spiritual successor to the original. While it captured the essence of the firstTales, it didn’t touch on what its characters had been up to, leaving their story unfinished until recently.

Why the Debt or Alive Novel Implies No More Tales From The Borderlands Titles

With the novel now answering the questions of what hijinks Fiona and Sasha found themselves in after opening the Vault of the Traveler, there’s much less incentive for another game to materialize, even if fans might welcome it. There has been no mention or rumors about anotherTales from the Borderlandstitle, and it’s likely Gearbox is focusing mostly on the next mainline entry as well as theTiny Tina’s Wonderlandssequelfor the foreseeable future. So, although fans can take comfort that there is more material featuring the popular and well-realized figures fromTales, that also likely means the characters have probably had their time in the sun and won’t be seen again.

There is always the possibility thatTales from the Borderlandscharacters could pop up inBorderlands 4or other future entries as cameos or references, though, given that this has occurred once before.
