Summary
Call of Dutyplayers are expressing their frustrations with the latestModern Warfare 3update after it removes the ability to turn off on-demand texture streaming in-game. The latestModern Warfare 3update went live on August 21 with a plethora of new content, but many players say the mid-season patch is ruining their gameplay experience.
Toincrease FPS in bothModern Warfare 3andWarzoneon PC, players have often been known to disable on-demand texture streaming. If left on,Call of Dutywill stream the game’s textures while the user is playing, as opposed to downloading them directly to the console when the game is installed. Activision says the overall aim of on-demand texture streaming is to reduce the massive file size that often comes with eachCall of Dutytitle. Although players once had the choice to turn this feature on and off, a new update forces the user to keep it enabled, and it hasn’t gone down well with fans.
With the release ofCall of Duty’s Season 5 Reloaded update,Modern Warfare 3andWarzone’s texture streaming setting now includes two options: minimal, which will only download essential textures, and optimized, which will download high-quality textures to enhance the game experience. While the setting could previously be turned off, players will now constantly be downloading textures from the internet while they play. For those with a poor internet connection, this is proving to be quite an issue.
Call of Duty Player Frustrated Over Texture Streaming
Over on theModern Warfare 3subreddit, various users are reporting that the game’s overall performance is worse now that texture streaming is constantly enabled. Reddit userEvening_Travel_9090said they are completely unable to play because of their poor internet connection. They also urged Activision to revert the texture streaming and allow players to turn it off again. However, there were also some users claiming to have no issues when the setting is set to minimum, so it appears as though this issue varies from one player to the next and is likely down to the individual’s internet connection.
In recent years, Activision has faced serious criticism for the overallfile size of newCall of Dutygames. With each new entry often taking over 100 GB of hard drive space each year,Modern Warfare 3andWarzone’s new forced texture streaming is likely just another way to prevent the titles from taking up so much storage space. But for players with a poor internet connection, many would rather simply allow the shooter to take up the extra space.
Call of Dutyplayers were once again left concerned at thesupposed file size forBlack Ops 6, after a store listing indicated that the upcoming shooter would be over 300 GB. Activision went on to clarify that this includes multiple otherCall of Dutygames and has also recently confirmed that it will be decouplingWarzonefrom theCall of DutyHQ app to allow users to better manage their storage. As the company clearly has a strong focus on reducing the file size forCall of Duty, it’s unlikely to see the studio revert to the new forced texture streaming option.
