It’s already been a pretty lengthy road forCivilization 7. Following the announcement that long-time Firaxis lead Jake Solomon was leaving the studio back in February of last year, publisher 2K confirmed that the nextCivilizationentry was in development.Civilization 7was then officially re-revealed during this year’s Summer Game Fest, where it was given a 2025 release date. It was also announced that gameplay would be revealed sometime in August 2024.

It’s now August, and true to its word, Firaxis has announced thatCivilization 7’s first gameplay reveal will drop on August 20, in two separate installments. The firstCivilization 7gameplay reveal will take place duringGamescom Opening Night Live, where a new trailer for the game will be included in the Geoff Keighley-hosted presentation. A few hours later, Firaxis is hosting an officialCivilization 7Gameplay Showcase on Twitch, which will last for 20 minutes and will feature “exclusive insights from the development team.” While these gameplay reveals are already sounding pretty good, there are a few things fans would love to see from them.

What Fans Want to See From Civilization 7’s Gameplay Reveal

Who’s Made The Cut For Civilization 7’s Roster

One of the most important questions that fans need an answer to is who’s going to be included inCivilization 7’s roster of world leaders. No official word has been spoken on how many playable leadersCivilization 7will have at launch, or who those leaders will be, though the game’s announcement trailer did tease the appearance of Cleopatra and Genghis Khan. It would be great to see a full overview of the game’s entire playable roster in the upcomingCivilization 7Gameplay Showcase, though if that’s too much of a tall order, then it’d be great to see just a handful of leaders get confirmed for the sequel, including some series mainstays and hopefully some new faces.

If Civilization 7 Is Going to Tweak or Add Any Victory Conditions

WhenCivilization 7was first announced back in February 2023, many fans were quick to express their desire for new, or at least different victory conditions in the sequel.Civilization’s victory conditionshave remained largely the same for a while now, so switching them up inCiv 7would be a great way to immediately set the next entry apart from those that have come before it. Hopefully, Firaxis can dedicate a small portion ofCivilization 7’s Gameplay Showcase to revealing any new steps needed to complete classic victory conditions or tease some altogether new ones that bring about entirely new strategies.

What Gameplay Features Set Civilization 7 Apart From its Predecessors

As alluded to in the section above,Civilization 7needs to stand apart from its predecessors in some significant ways, and fans are wondering just how Firaxis is going to achieve that lofty goal. According to Firaxis' blog post detailing the game’s August showcase,Civilization 7’s gameplay revealwill show some “innovative new features” of this “revolutionary new chapter in the franchise.” Those are some pretty weighty words, and hopefully, they’re an indication that fans will see some major additions and changes coming to theCivilizationfranchise on August 20.

ButCivilization 7doesn’t just need to stand apart from its predecessors. With very similar4X strategy games likeAra: History UntoldbeatingCiv 7to the punch this year, it’s more important than ever for the franchise’s next flagship entry to prove its worth, and that should be a clear takeaway from its upcoming August showcase.
