Summary
Sid Meier’s Civilization 7is making a change to the long-running series that seems to be bothering some fans, and it occurs when a player takes over an opponent’s city. More than 25 minutes of gameplay footage fromSid Meier’s Civilization 7was released recently, and part of that reveal shows captured cities immediately adapting to the look of the conquering nation.
Scheduled for release in 2025, the game’s upcoming launch will mark the arrival of the first full game in the series in more than eight years. Along with the recent announcement ofGame of Thronesalum Gwendoline Christie as theCivilization 7narrator, plenty of other reveals have been coming for the game over the past several days, and most have been met with a pleased reaction from fans.
The observation regarding the aesthetic change to the game’s city-conquering mechanics was pointed out on Reddit by user Anonim97_bot, who shared screenshots of a lengthy officialCivilization 7gameplay showcaserevealed about a week ago. Those screenshots single out a three-second section ofthe showcase, right at the 10-minute marker, showing two of theCivilization 7leaders, Hatshepsut of Egypt and Augustus of Rome, at war. The Egyptian army takes over one of the Roman cities, which instantly transforms its imagery on the world map to reflect Egyptian-style buildings of the age. This contrasts with previous entries in the series, in which cities would retain their original architecture until the dawn of the next age, and the lack of realism brought about by the change is upsetting some fans.
Civilization 7 Makes Visual Change to City Conquering
Civilization 7will feature three distinct ages– Antiquity, Exploration, and Modern – with a crisis occurring between each as the people of each civilization adjust to the changing of the times. That’s consistent with the number of ages inCivilization 6but a big reduction from the number of eras inCivilization 5, which had seven. SinceCiv 7will see each civilization undergo fewer monumental changes than some previous entries in the series, it would leave fewer opportunities for cities to take on a uniform appearance under the old conquering system. Still, Anonim97_bot offered a potential solution of having new improvements to each city take on the look of the new civilization while antique structures retain their original appearance.
The city-conquering aesthetic change is far from the onlynew feature coming inCivilization 7. The latest entry in the series will also feature the aforementioned Crisis System that will kick in at the end of each age, as well as legacy paths, which players will be able to use as goalposts on their way to victory.
