How To Play Roka Effectively In Concord
Roka is reminiscent of playingThe Soldier fromTeam Fortress 2andplaying Phara from Overwatch 2. All 3 of these characters make use of a splash damage weapon and are able to reach areas higher than any other characters in their game. The Soldier only needs a high jump for the scale of Team Fortress 2’s levels, while Phara utilizes full flight options to support allies or push enemies off a payload. The levels in Concord are more Deathmatch-styled, so full flight is not something any character has inConcord.
Understanding Roka’s Unique Movement
Some characters can only jump once, and some can jump twice, but there are a small number of characters, like Roka, who offer atriple jump. This allows her to reach areas others cannot, and she is able to traverse maps far more efficiently. She is also able tohover in the air and dodge while airborne. Players should learn the layouts of maps if they plan on playing Roka, as it will give them easy escape routes — and players will need to know those, since Roka only has170 Health.
Concordfeatures many accessibility featuresto help make highly mobile characters easier to deal with by being able to resize HUD elements.
Engaging Enemies With Roka
When it comes to engaging enemies in combat, Roka is able to peak around a corner, fire off a missile, then backtrack. Her missiles will keep traveling while she is safely behind cover, and missed shots have a chance to deal splash damage. She can then pop back out for her next shot. Roka has aslower rate of firecompared to other characters, while still being relatively fast shooting — this works heavily in her favor, as it allows her to deal ample damage, especially whenfiring multiple missiles between each duck for cover. This will also deny enemies the opportunity to damage her back.
She is also able to jump, hover, fire off some rockets, and then dodge into an open window. Taking shots at any enemy she may see without even needing to fully engage them helps allies tremendously, as she’sgreat at softening up enemy targets. If an enemy tries to charge toward you, keep your distance and shoot ahead of them to ensure consistent damage. Enemycharacters come in many different forms, and some will take a lot more damage before going down.
Roka’s Abilities In Concord, Explained
Roka hasfive abilities: two passive, two active, and one Combat Trait. These are not abilities that need a lot of uptime, and they will only come into play when circumstances demand them. Thanks tohow the game is monetized, players will have access to every existing and future character to make use of their kits as soon as they are in the game.
Missile Lock
When a player aims down their sight, an enemy can be targeted for a lock-on effect. Roka’s rockets will then curve to more accurately hit their intended targets.
Explosive Jumps
Roka is able to causedamaging explosions whenever she double or triple jumps. These can help soften up enemies that she crosses paths with when coming around a corner, but she should not attempt to close the distance just to use them — great situational damage, but not something to build your playstyle around.
Hover Targeting
Roka’sMissile Lock will be fasterwhile she is using her Hover Thrusters ability. This is her default Combat Trait and using different Variants will change this ability.
Hover Thrusters
Using this ability will cause Roka tomaintain her current place in the air. She will be able to freely move around while the ability is in effect. Pressing this ability a second time will end the effect. There is a resource bar next to this ability, and it will deplete while it’s active; it will refill once the ability ends or is canceled.
Blast Dive
When activated, Roka willhop into the airand telegraph her point of impact. Pressing the ability again will cause her toslam downat the targeted area to deal damage.
Strategies For Roka In Concord
There are many different game modes in Concord, some allowing respawning and some not. This candramatically change how you approach situations, and certain abilities may want to be used in a specific way, rather than how they appear at face value. There are alsonew game modes and maps on the way, so players will want to stay up to date on strategies.
Enemies In The Zone
While players have control of the zone, Roka is able toperch in a blind spot— be it sitting on a platform or hoving in the air. She can then aim at the zone and shoot the enemies she locks onto. If her cover is blown, she can simply back up or cancel her hover to drop to safety. Knowing multiple locations allows players to shuffle where they attack from. This requires players to take the time tolearn each zone on each map, but it is a brilliant way to constantlyput pressure on enemiesoccupying the zone and get them off of it for your own team to take over.
Teammates In The Zone
While your teammates are in the zone, Roka is able tomonitor potential zones of attackfrom enemies and lend suppressive fire to those zones, preventing enemies from dealing sustained damage. This can allow teammates to quickly rack up points towards victory.
Alone In The Zones
This is not a good situation for Roka, but when your teammates are not pulling their weight, you might need to put yourself in the zone. Roka isnot as tanky as an anchor character, but she is a Haunt, meaning she has some tricks to dodge damage.Make use of triple jumps, dodges, and aerial dodgeswhile firing at any enemies within your line of sight. It doesn’t matter that Roka is not tanky; she is an incredibly fearsome opponent at a distance thanks to her splash damage keeping enemies at bay.
If another teammate joins you in the zone, consider leaving the zone to support them from a new position anddivide enemies' attention.
Enemy Encounters In The ‘Wild’
When you encounter 1 or more enemies while moving around the map, maintain distance. Fire out rockets and duck behind cover. If there is an alternate route to where the enemy is, such as a window, pop out and take shots from that to keep them guessing. If you are low on health, don’t give the enemy an easy kill.Retreating to get some healthcan deny the enemies zones. Only follow up on exchanges that you know you’re able to win to give your team an edge.
