Appearing briefly on-screen at the start of every match, emerging out of Superlight travel and launching its dropship, the Northstar boasts a sleek visual design, with an eye-catching cross-shaped wing, some bulky engines, and a distinct bridge. And much like the rest ofConcord’s universe, there’s more lore to the Northstar than meets the eye.
The Lore of Concord’s Northstar Ship Explained
The Northstar is a Warship With a Lot of History
According toConcord’s in-game Galactic Guide, the Northstar was likely built around 90 years before the events ofConcord’s main story. Though exact details of the ship’s creation are unknown, all evidence points to it being an old Guild warship made specifically for use during the final years of the Core Worlds' Robot Wars. With it being created for war, the Northstar is home to an arsenal of high-tech weaponry, though that all pales in comparison to the ship’s state-of-the-art stealth systems, which allowthe Freegunner crew of the Northstarto avoid any unwanted Guild entanglements.
Though the Guild has a wealth of highly advanced weapons and navigation systems at its disposal, it lost access to stealth technology like that housed within the Northstar afterthe Tempest disaster. Speaking of which, it’s heavily rumored that the Northstar is the last remaining ship to have witnessed the first tear of The Tempest, the gigantic space storm that ripped the galaxy in two 82 years beforeConcord.
It’s possible that somewhere hidden deep within the Northstar’s memory banks is a detailed account of what happened in the lead-up to The Tempest’s first appearance, and what soon followed, which is knowledge that has long been forgotten. Because of this sensitive information and the ship’s one-of-a-kind stealth system,the villainous Guildhas been trying to track down the Northstar and seize it for their own gain.
The Northstar Is Guided By a Loyal Captain
Though the history of the Northstar is a little unclear, at some point in the last 80 years it found its way to an area of the Concord galaxy’s Wilds known as The Smudge. Here, it came into contact with a robot consciousness. Having been Sparked (lost her physical form), this robotic consciousness merged with the Northstar. Now known as Captain, this robot can transfer her consciousness freely throughout the Northstar and its FROG dropship and uses her abilities to guide her Freegunner crew across the stars.
Captain sees her crew as her home, and she’ll remain loyal to them for as long as she can, taking them acrossthe Concord galaxyto complete various shady jobs and smuggle whatever resources they can sell on the black market. But deep down, Captain’s loyalties lie with the Northstar, and if the Guild comes looking, she knows she’ll protect the ship at whatever cost.
