Summary
Dead by Daylightcame out of the gate swinging with its strong gameplay premise. Though asymmetrical multiplayer games had been attempted before,Dead by Daylight’s 1 Killer vs 4 Survivors system felt like a natural fit for the horror genre, being a highly accessible experience, but offering plenty of room for more complex mechanics and strategies in the future. Eight years later,Dead by Daylightoffers more than enough complexity, with 43 Survivors and 36 Killers currently in the game, each one with its own set of unique Perks and abilities that can drastically affect gameplay.
Though there are plenty oforiginal Killers and Survivors inDead by Daylight, some of the most exciting are those pulled from other horror franchises. FromAlientoChild’s Playto even fellow games likeAlan Wake,Dead by Daylighthas more than its fair share of licensed characters, and these collaborations show no sign of stopping soon.Castlevania’s Trevor Belmont and Dracula are taking center stage on August 27 with the release ofDead by Daylight’s 33rd Chapter, and their appearance should spark a chain reaction in the long-dormant Konami franchise.
It’s been over a decade since the lastCastlevaniagame hit store shelves, and that means it’s also been a decade since Dracula and Trevor Belmont received proper 3D character models. While there have been a plethora ofCastlevaniacrossover appearances in games likeDead CellsandSuper Smash Bros. Ultimate, they have often used 2D versions of characters like Alucard and Simon Belmont.Dead by Daylight, therefore, is the first game in a long time that’s given Dracula and Trevor fully modern, 3D makeovers.
Based on his appearance in the 2005 PS2 3D action-RPGCastlevania: Curse of Darkness,Dead by Daylight’s version of Trevor Belmontwears a white shirt, a leather waistcoat, brown leather boots, and an assortment of overlapping belts and buckles.Dead by Daylight’s Dracula, on the other hand, dives a bit deeper intoCastlevania’s history, with his outfit being based on hisSymphony of the Nightappearance from 1997.
ThoughDead by Daylight’s graphics aren’t the most impressive, both Trevor and Dracula’s character models fit the game’s horror aesthetic quite well. On top of that, theseDead by Daylight Castlevaniamodelsprovide a strong basis for any future 3DCastlevaniaprojects, which Konami hopefully has on its to-do list.
A New 3D Castlevania Game Should Be on The Cards
For a decade, fans have been asking Konami fora newCastlevaniagame. While many fans would likeCastlevania’s big comeback to be in the form of a 2D side-scroller in a similar vein to classics likeSymphony of the NightandAria of Sorrow, it would still be great to see a brand new 3DCastlevaniagame hit the market. Though the early N64Castlevaniagames are arguably some of the series' worst entries, theLords of Shadowduology,Lament of Innocence, and the aforementionedCurse of Darknessall proved that a 3DCastlevaniagame could work.
A new 3DCastlevaniagame would need a lot more than just some shiny new character models inspired byDead by Daylight, but with the right care and attention, it could easily offer the big-budget AAA return of the franchise that fans have been waiting for.
