It’s the same type of reveal Kojima has used several times in the past, although a large portion of the fan base seems convinced that Purnell’s is the face behind the darkness.

Kojima has since confirmed that Fanning will be attached to the project in a central role, though there are still questions about what exactly that role will entail.
