Summary
Destiny 2has come a long way with its quality-of-life and accessibility features throughout updates from recent years. Not to mention, first and third-party companion services forDestiny 2also provide players with plenty of features that make certain aspects of the game more convenient. However,Destiny 2still has some room to grow when it comes to inventory management and the services provided by the game’s social hubs.
Limited inventory space is a common, practically inevitable problem to face when playing looter-shooters, so this isn’t something thatDestiny 2is alone in struggling with. Still though,Destiny 2especially struggles with limited inventory space when it comes to the game’s Engram system, where players earn loot that needs to be taken to one of the game’s social destinations before it can be used.
How Destiny 2 Could Solve Its Inventory Management Problem
As it currently stands, players can only earn up to ten encrypted Bright, Legendary, orExotic Engrams inDestiny 2before their inventory becomes full. Once players reach this capacity, any additional Engrams players earn will be transported to their Postmaster. However, the Postmaster also has a limited inventory, and players will no longer be able to earn any new loot after reaching the Postmaster’s capacity.
Destiny 2’s Postmaster has a maximum inventory of 21 items.
The remedy for not missing out on loot inDestiny 2is to visit the game’s social destinations to clear out these inventories between every few activities and missions. Otherwise, discarding unopened Engrams will free some inventory spots, but this won’t give the player any rewards. However, these pit stops to the Tower aren’t always practical when players get into the momentum of completing back-to-back activities, or when playing lengthy endgame activities, likeDestiny 2’s Grandmaster Nightfall Strikes, Raids, and Dungeons.
In hindsight,Destiny 2has the opportunity to add a new quality-of-life feature that could immediately address the inconvenience of frequently visiting the Tower. By allowing players to earn partial or full rewards from dismantling encrypted Engrams in their inventory from any location, be it inside of an ongoing mission or from orbit, this could be a game-changer forDestiny 2’s inventory management issues. Especially considering that all of this time spent traveling to and from the Tower can add up across multiple long play sessions, it might be time forDestiny 2to change up its approach to social destinations, even beyond the scope of addressing players’ limited Engram inventory.
Destiny 2’s Social Hubs Are Due For a Change
Destiny 2’s Engram inventory issues are arguably a symptom of a bigger issue, that the Tower and other social spaces have become increasingly obsolete and/or an inconvenience to visit. This has become apparent due to how many of the services that were originally exclusive to these social spaces have recently been made available to players viathird-party companion services forDestiny 2, such as accepting bounties and accessing the player’s vault without the need to visit the social space. So in hindsight, it’s arguably time that theDestinyfranchise reconsidered the importance of its social spaces, and how often players should be visiting them.
Given thatDestiny 2has slowly been moving in this direction over the past few years by integrating QoL features, biting the bullet on making the services of its social spaces fully accessible from orbit could be a natural progression for the franchise. This kind of massive change could potentially solveDestiny 2’s Engram inventory issues, as well as several other minor inconveniences that the game faces.
At the very least,Destiny 2should arguably consider allowing players to dismantle unopened Engrams without needing to travel to theCryptarch in the Tower social space. However,Destiny 2could also stand to benefit from taking a broader look at the services available in its social spaces, and how traveling there for a pit stop every few missions can be a tedious, yet avoidable inconvenience.
