Summary
Michael C. Hall shocked fans at San Diego Comic Con 2024, when he showed up during theDexterpanel, joining the cast of the prequel series,Dexter: Original Sin. He arrived brandishing donuts in a nod to the titular serial killer he played between 2006-2013, and once again in the sequel limited series,Dexter: New Bloodin 2021. Turns out, he wasn’t just there as an executive producer of the new series, whenit was revealed during a tease of the opening credits ofDexter; Original Sin, that Michael C. Hall would also be narrating the seriesas ‘the inner voice of Dexter.’
It’s unclear exactly what direction Michael C. Hall’s narration will take inDexter: Original Sin, but it needs to be used in a very different way to how it was in the original series, as Dexter is no longer reacting to events as they take place, with Patrick Gibson now playing a younger version of the serial killer. Michael C. Hall also confirmed that he would be starring in a new sequel calledDexter: Resurrection.
Michael C. Hall’s ‘Inner Voice Of Dexter’ Needs To Be Different While Also Maintaining What Made It Great In The Original Series
Michael C. Hall’sDexter voiceoverin the new prequel series will be keyto telling the story of the early years of the serial killer with a code. Hall’s voice provided a key component to the original series and its sequel, butthe narration does need to take on a different tone inDexter: Original Sinif it is to strike the right balancebetween driving the narrative forward and revealing Dexter’s inner thoughts.
It will likely take on a reflective tone, withDexter’s narration inOriginal Sinpossibly recounting his early years, as opposed to reacting to the events as they take place. The creative team must make sure the narration doesn’t overshadow Patrick Gibson’s take on the younger version of the character. If utilized correctly, it could be a very effective way to tell the story.
The originalDexterseries was guilty of overusing Dexter’s voiceover in the later seasons, and if the same happens inDexter: Original Sin, the prequel could be heading for an abrupt end early into its run, with fans potentially losing interest.Dexter: Original Sinneeds to establish itself as its own thing without an over reliance on Michael C. Hall’s presence.
Despite certain trepidation over Michael C. Hall’s return inDexter: Original Sin, with no specific details of what form his narration will take, there is excitement over his involvement in the prequel series. He was already on board as an executive producer onDexter: Original Sinbefore the announcement he would be providing the narration as well.Hall’s dulcit tones will add familiarity to the new show for long-time fans, but it must be more than just fan service if it is to work effectively.

Dexter: Original Sinwill be set in 1991, 15 years before the events ofDexter began. The prequel series will focus on the newly graduated Dexter Morgan (Patrick Gibson) as he begins an internship in the forensics department at Miami Metro Homicide, under the leadership of CSI chief, Tanya Martin (Sarah Michelle Gellar), with dirty-minded Vince Masuka (Alex Shimizu) also on the team.
Dexter’s urge to kill is getting harder to control, with his adoptive father, Harry Morgan, developing the code for his young son to follow, as the Miami Metro detective earmarks potential deserving victims of Dexter’s kill table, while keeping his dark secret away from his teenage daughter, Debra Morgan (Molly Brown).
Dexter; Original Sinwill also tell the origin stories of Angel Batista (James Martinez) and Maria LaGuerta (Christina Milian) as they rise up the ranks of Miami Metro Homicide, with a slew of new characters including Detective Bobby Watt (Reno Wilson) and Captain of Miami Metro Homicide, Aaron Spencer (Patrick Dempsey) adding much needed stakes to the prequel series.
Dexter: Original Sindoesn’t have to include Sgt Doakes, and thus far, nobody has been cast to play the younger version of the ferocious detective inDexter: Original Sin. However, the possibility remains that Doakes could turn up later on to bridge the gap between the prequel and the original show. However, there is a concerning omission ofone key character inDexter: Original Sin: Tom Matthews. Despite Geoff Pierson only playing Matthews in a recurring role inDexter, he was considered to be a close confidante of Harry Morgan in the earlier timeline, so he must turn up at some point.Dexter: Original Sinwill debut on Showtime in December 2024.
