Summary

Dexter: Resurrectionwill star Michael C. Hall as the titular serial killer with a code, and he’ll likely be joined by more familiar faces. However, there’s one character who should very much be left in the past and that is Dexter’s former girlfriend, Hannah McKay.When Harrison tracked Dexter down to the small town in Iron Lake, he revealed that Hannah had died of pancreatic cancer in the intervening years. But Harrison could’ve been lying, and she could still be very much alive.

Dexter’s former love interestwas a very unpopular character in the original series, andDexter: New Bloodappeared to respond to the criticism by killing her off-screen. However, Dexter’s story is now unexpectedly continuing inDexter: Resurrectionandthere might be a temptation to bring fellow serial killer, Hannah McKay back.McKay was played by Yvonne Strahovski inDexter, and she appeared in a total of 17 episodes in the final two seasons.

Hannah McKay Was Unpopular With Many Fans And For That Reason She Should Probably Stay Dead

Hannah McKay first appeared inDexterseason 7, as the accomplice of a spree killer by the name of Wayne Randall. Whenkey character, Angel Batista, (David Zayas) took Dexter along to take a blood sample from Hannah at her home, he was totally transfixed by her. However, after Dexter did his research, he realized McKay very much played a key part in the spree murders, and fittedHarry’s code. Dexter’s kill table was set up, and he was about to plunge the knife into her when he had a sudden change of heart, and the pair of serial killers had sex instead. It was the start of a tumultuous relationship which many fans hated because Dexter ignored the code out of pure lust for Hannah, and it clouded his judgment for the remainder of the show.

Fans were relieved when it was revealed inDexter: New Bloodthat Hannah had died off-screen of a mundane death, after she’d brought Harrison up in Argentina, when Dexter faked his own death and disappeared fromthe iconic location of Miamiat the end of the originalDexterseries. However,if a death isn’t witnessed on screen, there is always a chance that a character could return, but Hannah McKay should probably stay dead.

Dexter Morgan was always searching for someone who understood his dark passenger and accepted him for it.Lumen Pierce (Julia Stiles) looked like the character who could fill that void in season 5 after she helped Dexter kill a series of villains, but her darkness was temporary, and she didn’t stick around for long. When Hannah McKay showed up in season 7, Dexter thought he’d finally found the one, despite the fact that his new love interest killed innocent people without a second thought. Dexter chose to look past her faults, and they became an item before he eventually had to turn her in.

Despite her off-screen death, there might be a temptation to bring Hannah McKay back inDexter’s upcoming sequel.Harrison was the one who told Dexter that Hannah had died, and this could’ve been a lie, so his father wouldn’t seek to rekindle his relationship with the evil killer. Even though she was unpopular with a large section of fans,Hannah McKay’s return would add a lot of exciting drama toDexter: Resurrection’s plot.In adiscussion on Reddit, Old_Imagination_931 summed up Dexter and Hannah’s twisted relationship:

As much as she appears to be maligned by a great number of fans for being nothing more than a ruthless killer that would dispose of anyone who got in her way, Hannah displayed a fierce sense of loyalty towards those she loved. Dexter knew this, which is why he hadn’t any doubt as to her remaining silent about him after she was imprisoned in season 7, nor reservations about her leaving with and taking good care of Harrison in his absence at the end of season 8. And while I hated how the writers turned their relationship into a soap opera towards the end of season 8, there’s no denying that she and Dexter were truly in love with each other, something neither had experienced that deeply before.

It might be tempting to bring Hannah back inDexter: Resurrectionbecause she did love Dexter, and saw past all his major flaws. Many fans expressed joy about the revelation of her death, but in many ways, it didn’t feel right that such a divisive character died in such a boring way. There is an argument for Hannah’s return inDexter: Resurrection, even if it is to kill her properly on screen this time,so she truly pays for her crimes. However, fans have enough on their plate trying to get their heads aroundDexter actually being alive inDexter: Resurrectionafter his fake-out death, so it might be wise to leave Hannah dead.
