Summary

Shinji Mikami, one of the original creators of Capcom’sResident EvilandDino Crisisfranchises, believesMonster Hunter’s success is standing in the way of aDino Crisisrevival. Considered the godfather of the survival horror genre, Mikami left his position as the head of Tango Gameworks last year before the studio was shuttered by Microsoft. Since then, he’s collaborated with fellow industry icon Suda51 onShadows of the Damned: Hella Remastered, set to release on Halloween, and has established KAMUY, another new studio of his own.

Ever since Capcom released itscritically acclaimed remake ofResident Evil 2in 2019, fans of the studio have seen the potential forDino Crisisto also make a return, either in the form of a ground-up remake or a series reboot. There have only been three mainlineDino Crisisgames, with the latest,Dino Crisis 3,releasing in 2003, making the franchise ripe for the Capcom remake treatment. Demand forDino Crisisonly continued to grow louder after Capcom’s dinosaur co-op shooterExoprimalunderwhelmed audiences last year.

While it makes sense to point towards Capcom’s highly successful survival horror seriesResident Evilas the reasonDino Crisishas yet to make a return, the franchise’s creator has a different idea. Whenspeaking with Eurogamer at Gamescom, Shinji Mikami shared that he believes it’s the success ofMonster Hunterthat’s keeping Capcom from greenlighting aDino Crisisremake or reboot. “Even if I were to decide to make a remake or a new version ofDino Crisis, I don’t really feel like there’s a whole lot of space for that kind of game right now, just sinceMonster Hunterhas become such a big game,” he said.

Shinji Mikami Thinks Monster Hunter Is Responsible for Dino Crisis Not Getting a Remake

While it’s true thatMonster Hunterfeatures a vast array of dinosaur-like creatures for players to chase down and hunt,Dino Crisiscouldn’t be any more different in terms of gameplay. Taking afterResident Evil,Dino Crisisis a survival horror game through and through. While the recentMonster Hunterentries offer sprawling open worldsand huge epic battles, a remake ofDino Crisiswould likely feel much closer to that of aResident Evil-style experience. Additionally, Capcom had no problem makingExoprimalalongside its ongoingMonster Hunterfranchise. It’s possible thatMonster Hunteris only preventingDino Crisis' revival in part, and thatResident Evil’s success has just as big a role to play.

WhileDino Crisisfans continue to hold out hope for Capcom to greenlight a remake or reboot,Monster Hunterfans have the franchise’snext major installment to look forward to in 2025 withMonster Hunter Wilds, which recently ha d a big showing at Gamescom. Perhaps Capcom will move on toDino Crisisafter it wraps up keyResident Evilgames that have yet to be remade, like the rumoredCode VeronicaorResident Evil Zero, but only time will tell.
