Dungeons of Hinterbergprovides all kinds of puzzles to solve as you gain new skills to take on tougher dungeons and enemies. Ancient Tree is the sixth dungeon with a level two difficulty rank, taking you away from the mountains of Doberkogel and into the beautiful sunset woods of Hinterwald. As the name might suggest,Dungeons of Hinterberg’sAncient Tree dungeonsees you enter a massive tree that looks as old as time itself. Not only must you climb the tree to reach the dungeon, you must also navigate its inner workings to reach the exit by using two new magical skills that you get from the Hinterwald area.
In addition to skill level, Ancient Tree also stands apart from some of the earlier dungeons in the game by its introduction of a side-on camera angle that follows its tree-hugging paths. Ancient Tree also has a few tricky puzzles to solve, testing your ability in both new skills.
How To Start The Ancient Tree Dungeon In Dungeons Of Hinterberg (Ancient Tree Location)
To begin the Ancient Tree dungeon, you first need to unlock theHinterwaldmap area by completing at least three level one dungeons in Doberkogel, such as the Abandoned Mineshaft,Giant Cavern, and Jelly Tunnels. On entering Hinterwald, head to the Skills Tree to pick up two new mainmagical skills:
Follow the signposts leading to the Ancient Tree dungeon and use your new skills to navigate across various gaps or vines. You’ll soon reach the base of a large tree, which you need to climb up using platforms, stairs, and even ziplines, defeating any enemies along the way. Eventually, you’ll reach the top of the tree, where you can find the portal entrance to the Ancient Tree dungeon as marked on the map below, which is located in theClimbing Park. Enter the portal to begin the dungeon.
Ancient Tree Dungeon Walkthrough And All Puzzle Solutions In Dungeons Of Hinterberg
On entering the Ancient Tree dungeon, head up the stairs and follow the wooden platform hugging the tree. Enter the small tree tunnel into the next area, then follow the path around and up - don’t forget to grab theoptional cheston the right to grab theShockwave on Slay charm. Keep ascending the slopes and climb the wooden ladder. Follow the path upwards and head into the next tunnel to reach the first main puzzle area, a wooden bridge with a set of stairs that you can turn.
Ancient Tree Puzzle One - Turning Bridge
Use yourWind Projectileskill to shoot the wooden flag post on the right. This spins the wooden platforms so they make a bridge that you’re able to cross, plus a set of stairs that leads to anoptional chest. Keep shooting the post with Wind Projectiles to navigate thistricky puzzleas shown in the video below. This enables you to reach the entrance to the next area, where two waves of enemies await. Defeat them and proceed to the next area.
The camera angle changes to a side-on view again as you enter the next area. Follow the platform along the tree, using Wind Projectile to navigate the platforms, lining it up with the green line.
Climb the ladder at the end to get anotheroptional chest. Climb back down and stand on the platform in the middle. Hit your Wind Projectiles again to raise the platform up so you can then climb the white ledges to the top. Go through the tunnel to the next area.
Ancient Tree Puzzle Two - Eye Blobs
Jump across the gaps to avoid falling in the pink goo or use the Whirlpool skill as needed. This time, two strange ‘eye’ blobs block the path. UseWind Projectileto grab the purple plant orbs and throw them at each “eye” structure blocking the path, as shown in the video below, which can be tricky.
Once the path is clear, jump across the gaps and climb up to the next area - another wide view moment around the tree. Climb up the wooden ladder and into the next area.
Ancient Tree Puzzle Three - Eyes On The Bridge
UseWind Projectileto move the wooden bridge and clear the second eye blob puzzle on the bridge -you’ll need to throw the orbs a lot further to reach the eye at the top, as shown in the video below - watch out for pink goo and save using the Waystone.
Ancient Tree Puzzle Four - Whirlwind Through The Wall
In the next area, you mustcombine Whirlwind and Wind Projectilewith some clever timing, as the video below demonstrates:
Enter the next area, climb up to platform to the plant orb, and use it to clear the next eye.
Navigating Platforms With Whirlwinds
UseWhirlwindto get across the green vines safely in the next zone. Keep using it to climb upwards, defeating any enemies. Use Whirlwind to grab the orbs to destroy eye on the right, continuing upwards along the tree, then climbing the ladder to the top. Use a Whirlwind on the wooden floor to reach the next orbs. Grab these to destroy the eye, using Whirlwind to reach the next area.
Cross the bridge and use theWaystoneto save your progress. Climb the steps, fight any enemies that spawn, and grab the optional chest under the stairs. Ride the zipline at the top to reach the final platform, topping up any health as needed and climbing the final ladder.
Ancient Tree Final Boss Fight And Achievements In Dungeons of Hinterberg
The Ancient Treeboss battlebegins once you reach the top and enter the arena. It’s a level two boss, so it has some powerful projectile attacks. However, if you focus on the boss and avoid projectiles, you shouldn’t have too much trouble.
Defeating all the enemies completes the Ancient Tree Dungeon - congratulations! Open thechestto get a new set ofarmorand get your book stamped before exiting the dungeon through the portal. You’ll also unlock theBeginner Slayer achievementby beating five dungeons.
