Summary
After teasing its fanbase, Techland reveals its latest game,Dying Light: The Beast, with a new trailer that also confirms the return of protagonist Kyle Crane. Following its work onDead Island, Techland moved on to theDying Lightfranchise, a series which takes the zombies and open world elements and mixes them with first person parkour. Naturally, the series has become hugely popular with players, going on to spawn an expansion and sequel in the years after.
However,Dying Light 2pushed the game’s narrative forward, leaving the events of the first game and its characters in the past. Similar to the first game,Dying Light 2would receive extensive post-launch content and updates, keeping players engaged with new content ranging from cosmetics, seasonal events, and tons of crossovers with franchises likeThe Walking Dead,For Honor, and more. WhileDying Light 2would go on to be another big hit for Techland, many wondered what was next for the franchise, and at Gamescom 2024, Techland finally answered those questions with a big reveal.
DuringGeoff Keighley’s Opening Night Live at Gamescom 2024, Techland revealed its next game asDying Light: The Beast. The trailer opens with soldiers seemingly on the hunt for something, unknowingly being hunted from the shadows by something not human. Eventually, the soldiers come across the slaughter of other members of their squad before being struck down by the monster. Before long, the shot turns to the sunrise over a city and the appearance of Kyle Crane looking out over it. With a bloodshot eye, it’s heavily implied that Kyle may have been that Volatile stalking the soldiers during the night.
Kyle Crane Returns in Dying Light: The Beast
While details forDying Light: The Beastremains scarce, just the fact that Crane is back seems to confirm the canon ending. While players were given a choice of how they wanted to endDying Light: The Following’s story, it seems Techland has gone with the non-nuclear option to craft this new game, where Kyle essentially falls to his infection and becomes a fully sentient Volatile.
Fans were made aware ofDying Light: The Beastthanks to a recently filed trademark, though many assumed it was intended to be asecond expansion forDying Light 2. As it turns out, that was the original plan, until Techland decided to expand the scope of this new standalone experience. Techland has confirmed that Kyle’s return is set inside of a new city alongside a new set of gameplay features. Better yet, owners ofDying Light 2 Stay HumanUltimate Edition will be getting this content at no extra cost.
