One of the major ways thatOverwatch 2justified its release prior to launch was its promise of featuring much more PvE content for the franchise, with many fans looking forward to the possibility of a full PvE campaign. After the game’s release, however, it quickly became clear that this PvE content was going to be a shadow of what it was originally intended to be, with more and more of a focus instead being placed on the title’s traditional PvP modes.
PvE is now essentially entirely absent fromOverwatch 2, with fans only receiving a handful of dedicated PvE missions that came with their own character spotlights and intertwining storylines. The narrative of these PvE missions covered some extremely important and still relevant aspects ofOverwatchlore, with its most recent mission ending on a cliffhanger that is begging to be answered. It seems that fans may never get closure to the tense showdown between Zenyatta and Ramattra, but this narrative thread can still be continued through something other than another PvE mission.
Overwatch 2 Has Many Ways it Could Continue Zenyatta and Ramattra’s Story
Originally being touted as multiple campaigns that would shed light on different groups ofOverwatchheroes, the final product ofOverwatch 2’s PvE experiences was very anticlimactic by comparison. With things likehero-specific talent trees also being scrapped from PvE content, fans ofOverwatch 2were instead only given a handful of story missions. These three missions, named Resistance, Liberation, and Ironclad, are the only three major PvE experiences that seem to be planned forOverwatch 2, with any future PvE plans being canceled in March 2024.
While these missions were underwhelming in the grand scheme of things, they did follow an engaging story that came with some stunning cinematics, with the epilogue for Ironclad clearly indicating a wider story that has seemingly been left in the dust by Blizzard. This epilogue cinematic gave fans some fascinating insight into the origins of the tank hero Ramattra, who originally lived among peaceful Omnic monks atthe same monastery asOverwatch’s Zenyatta.
Both Ramattra and Zenyattalooked up to the teachings of Master Mondatta, an Omnic monk who believed in peaceful co-existence with humanity despite the awful treatment of robotic life by humankind. Disillusioned with these peaceful pursuits, Ramattra would leave the monastery and go on to form Null Sector, a militant Omnic liberation group. The ending of the cinematic shows Master Mondatta’s politically explosive assassination at the hands of Widowmaker, with Widowmaker and other members of Talon then cornering Zenyatta before telling an unknown character that he has been captured.
Some Burning Questions Could Be Answered Through Future Comics or Animations For Overwatch 2
This leaves an abundance of questions that would have seemingly been answered in the next steps ofOverwatch 2’s PvE storyline, but this sadly may now never see the light of day. The cinematic suggests that Ramattra is unaware of Talon’s involvement in the death of his old master, or that Ramattra may have even sanctioned the killing in an attempt tostoke global conflict between Omnics and humans.
It would be a shame if this massively important element ofOverwatch 2lore was never expanded upon because of the shortcomings of the game’s PvE mode. Luckily, Blizzard still has plenty of other methods to further this narrative. One of the most engaging ways this could be done is via standalone future cinematics, with theOverwatchfranchise racking up millions of views over the yearsthrough its wide range of hero animations.
Alternatively, Blizzard could decide to carry on the PvE story through a dedicated comic book series, giving closure to fans while freeing up more animation resources for other cinematics relating to newer heroes. It is clear that the cliffhanger ofOverwatch 2’s PvE narrative needs a follow-up, and Blizzard still has many ways it could do this despite PvE gameplay being down for the count.
