val kilmer in the sonar suit

Updated on Jun 29, 2025, by Jake Fillery:There is an abundance of live-action Batman portrayals, each with its own unique suit. In practically every Batman movie, the character receives an updated new set of digs with pointy ears and a sharp cape to really bring the iconic Batman to life. Some Batman movies even feature more than one suit for the Caped Crusader, so how many are there, and how do they rank?

16Sonar Suit

Kilmer’s Second Suit That Comes in a Lighter Black

The Sonar Suit was used in the final fight against the Riddler and featured a silvery-black shade that warped its design. It’s supposed to be a more high-tech armor in its prototype phases, and in some regards, that’s obvious from how it seems somewhat unfinished. There’s a lack of color to bring the suit together, even if Kilmer looks great in the spandex.

In some lightning, the suit looks oddly silver, whereas in others, it’s rubbery and black. Regardless of what shade of grey this Batsuit is, it’s not one of the Caped Crusader’s best looks, and it’s best to leave it behind, even if the stretched chest symbol and lack of nipples are a bonus.

15Ice Suit

Clooney’s Ice Armor Has More Prominent Accents But Not a Lot of Use

To try and combat Mr. Freeze’s Freeze Gun and other Ice Age-desiring weapons, Batman utilizes a new coat of paint from the Sonar Suit and thus creates the Ice Suit. The Ice Suit is impressionable upon its first witnessing due to how it steers away from the all-black nipple-covered theme and takes on bold new clashes of colors that work rather pleasantly.

The Ice Suit is a tad gimmicky due to its one and only use, but there’s something quite nice about seeing Batman in a new suit of armor that’s covered in navy blue accents and white pieces. It’s not a suit worthy of the main title, but it’s one that’s a tad over-hated for what it is.

14Batman & Robin’s Bat-Nipples Suit

Batman & Robinhad a fairly divisive reception for a few reasons, and George Clooney’s costume is most likely one of them. Clooney’s Batman might have been charismatic for Bruce Wayne, but the costume was certainly an eye sore with its entire black design providing no sense of color or popping moments to break up the suit.

The main feature of the suit isn’t just the all-black outfit, but thenotorious bat nippleson the chest piece. Molded after that of marble statues, the physique might seem masculine and ripped, but it’s definitely not cool and intimidating.

13Ben Affleck’s Blue and Gray Batsuit in The Flash

A Gorgeous Color Palette Clashing With Metal Parts

It was great to see Ben Affleck in the cowl again forThe Flash, even if it was a lengthy cameo. Yet, Affleck’s appearance came with yet another suit, and one that looked a tad stranger than previous iterations. Whilst the iconic color scheme of navy and gray deserves its time on the big screen, the strange armor plating can definitely stay in the Batcave.

Affleck’s cowl looks oddly misshapen, making his expressions look a tad goofy from behind the cowl, but that can still be forgiven if it weren’t for the armor plating around the chest and legs that just looks like junkyard scrap attached to a finer Batman costume.

12The Batman Forever Batsuit

Sculpted Muscles on All-Black Latex

Batman Forevermight not be everyone’s favorite Batman movie, but Val Kilmer definitely fit the bill when it came to Batman and Bruce Wayne. This is the first Batman movie without Tim Burton and Michael Keaton, so a new direction needs a new costume, one that keeps the black bat symbol with a yellow background toreally make it pop.

The bat symbol stands out thanks to the harsh black colors of the rest of the costume, which also features a gothic utility belt that makes it look rather alien and intimidating. What drags the suit down is the sculpted muscles and nipples, which can be pretty distracting for intimidation.

Batman-Adam-West

11Batman ’66s Campy Adam West Batsuit

Vibrant Velvet Blue and Gray Pyjamas

Adam West is who brought the iconic Batman into live-action popularity, and his go at the Caped Crusader is memorable for its campiness and 60s charm, who could ever forget that costume? Adam West’s Batman is as comic book as it gets, with its thick and uncomfortable yellow utility belt and the rather cozy briefs and tights.

Adam West’s Batman costume looks like a comfortable Halloween costume, and that’s not a bad thing for the 60s, or how the character looked in the comics at that time. Adam West’s Batman is iconic for its own reasons, and the brows attached to the cowl are underrated features that aid in expressions.

10Michael Keaton’s Modern Batsuit in The Flash

Modernizing an All-Black Classic

Michael Keaton’s Batman returns inThe Flash, and he has since hung up the cape and the cowl after Gotham City’s crime problem is no more. Keaton has a colorful library of exciting bat suits, but the one he chooses to fight the Kryptonians in is a sleek modern suit with modernized plating and sharp edges on the muscles and cowl, along with that robust bat symbol.

The modern batsuit is basically Keaton’s iconic look with a few revisions and modern touches, so it’s not exactly a bad suit, but there is just a tad too much black for it to really stand out, even if it’s just great to see Keaton in the suit again after 31 years.

Christian Bale surrounded by a swarm of bats in Batman Begins

9Batman Begins' Nomex Batsuit

Christian Bale’s Stiff and Bulky First Batsuit

The first batsuit that Christian Bale wears as Batman is referred to as the Nomex suit, and in canon, it’s designed by Lucius Fox to be a prototype armor for soldiers. Taken by Bruce Wayne and painted all black, this first attempt at a batsuit looked bulky and intimidating but had a cowl where once again Batman couldn’t turn his head, which led to some goofy body movements.

The bat symbol looked good stretched across the chest, and the golden utility belt helped break up the black, and the velvet cape was a nice touch as it drapes over shoulders, but the suit just seemed a tad too big for an agile Batman.

batman returns - michael keaton as batman

8Keaton’s 2.0 Batsuit from Batman Returns

More Streamlined, Equally Black, and Less Rubbery

Batman’s suit inBatman Returnsis far more angular and militarized than it was inBatman(1989), and this provides Batman with a more artificial muscle look that seems somewhat reminiscent of the design of the Batmobile. There were elements of this suit that worked and others that didn’t.

The strong yellows on the bat symbol and the utility belt break up the black nicely, but the new material that the suit was made from seemed too refined. Whilst it seemed more practical for an experienced Batman, it lacked that gothic look of the original 89 version, even if it’s still cool.

Zack Snyder Justice League Ben Affleck Batman Knightmare

7Knightmare Batsuit

The Knightmare Timeline Provides a Fashionable Coat and Cowl for Affleck

Looking at the Knightmare Batsuit, it’s impossible not to be impressed. Combining elements of Affleck’s Batsuit with that of a Mad Max vibe is certainly one way to draw in attention, and it works in all the right ways. The thick leather duster and the combat pants, paired with the gauntlets, cowl, and chest piece make for a greatly kit-bashed set-up.

While audiences can fight over whether or not a Batman from an apocalypse timeline should use a gun or not, surely it’s agreeable that Batman in a duster coat just works so well for the aesthetics alone, and seeing the duster drape across the sand makes for one of the best looks out there.
