Summary
Playing as a ghoul inFallout 76will allow players to experience a variety of new interactions and story decisions. These revelations were recently offered by a senior Bethesda official in an attempt to shed some more light on this majorFallout 76feature that’s currently in development.
Bethesda announced plans toallowFallout 76players to experience the game as ghoulsback in early June 2024. The studio is currently aiming to release this featurein early 2025.
Fallout 76 Ghoul Players Will Experience Different NPC Interactions
Whiletransforming into a ghoul inFallout 76will obviously alter the character’s appearance, the change itself will be far from superficial. That’s according to the game’s creative director, Jonathan Rush, who said as much during a recent Gamescominterview with TheGamer. One of the ways in which playing as a ghoul will change one’s experience of exploring Appalachia will come in the form of unique NPC interactions, as some characters will treat these heavily irradiated creatures differently from humans. However, this change won’t apply retroactively, with ghoul-specific interactions being exclusive to future content.
Fallout 76 Ghoul Players Will Also Be Able to Make Unique Decisions
It also sounds like ghouls will get someunique ways to progressand completeFallout 76quests. “For future story updates or new content going in, where you’re interacting with NPCs and making decisions, being a ghoul is going to be taken into account,” Rush explained. The full extent of the changes brought about by playing as a ghoul is currently unclear, as the creative director did not provide any additional details on the matter.
For future story updates or new content going in, where you’re interacting with NPCs and making decisions, being a Ghoul is going to be taken into account.
In the meantime, what’s certain is that ghoul players will alsobe able to transform backinto humans with minimal effort. Although this ability is not exactly lore-friendly, it’s meant to encourageFallout 76players to give ghouling a go by not requiring them to sacrifice their character if they end up not liking the experience or grow tired of it. The ability to transform into a ghoulwill be tied to a questthat’s unlocked at level 50.
How much Bethesda ends up building on this feature moving forward remains to be seen. Its executive producer, Todd Howard, recently revealed that the developer already hasyears' worth ofFallout 76content planned, suggesting the live-service RPG will keep getting supported until at least 2026. The intensity of the developer’s efforts to create unique content for ghoul players from here on out will likely depend on how popular this feature ends up being. Should enough people respond positively to it,ghouls might also end up being playable inFallout 5, as Rush recently revealed.
