Summary

Fallout 76has changed a lot throughout its massive post-launch updates and several smaller patches over the last few years. However, as much as it has grown,Fallout 76still lacks one quality-of-life feature that fans have been asking for, practically since the game’s release.

Specifically, players have wanted a way to lock items in their inventory to prevent these items from being accidentally discarded. While the demand for such a feature has existed for a while now, the need for this QoL mechanic will reach a new extreme with thenew legendary crafting system coming toFallout 76in the Milepost Zero update.

Fallout 76’s New Legendary Crafting System Is an Accident Waiting to Happen

Fallout 76has come a long way in terms of new content, but it’s still missing some important QoL features like cross-play, cross-progression, and a current-gen console upgrade, to name a few. While some of these features could still come at some point in the game’s distant future, one missing QoL feature will be needed now more than ever, onceFallout 76’s Milepost Zero updatereleases. Since players will soon have the ability to scrap their legendary weapons at any crafting table, it’s crucial thatFallout 76simultaneously adds a way for players to lock items in their inventory to prevent them from being accidentally destroyed.

Fallout 76’s Milepost Zero update will be released on September 3rd, 2024, and it will be free for all players who own the game.

Accidentally discarding items is such an easy mistake to make that it’s laughably a rite of initiation for the endgame experience, right beside accidentally removing aCAMP inFallout 76that took hours to create. The joke being that a player isn’t a trueFallout 76veteran if they haven’t donated a god-roll weapon or armor piece to Todd Howard by sending it to the digital void. Ultimately, there are a few underlying reasons that make accidentally discarding legendary items a common mistake, including server lag, inconsistent UI navigation when playingFallout 76with a controller, and items mistakenly showing up in the ‘new’ inventory tab - all of which could be resolved by adding the option to lock an item.

Fallout 76 Players Want the Ability to Lock Inventory Items

Prior to the Milepost Zero update, players can somewhat lock items to their inventory by placing a premium skin fromFallout 76’s Atomic Shop on their weapons or armor. This won’t completely prevent these items from being destroyed, but it will add a confirmation prompt to certain actions, and it will also stop these items from showing up in trading menus with other players andNPC vendors inFallout 76. While relying on microtransactions to solve an in-game issue is hardly an ideal fix, in the grand scheme of things, this roundabout method for locking items is arguably better than nothing. With the new legendary crafting system coming soon though, it’s time for a better, proper solution to this longstanding problem.

Another way that players can approach this problem is to name weapons and armor something that would be immediately recognizable, or to put a specific character at the front of the item’s name so that it will be alphabetically sorted to the top or bottom of any menu interface.

Ahead of its release, the new legendary crafting system is already shaping up to be a divisive addition to the game, with many players already concerned that this new feature could lead them to accidentally discard theirgod-roll legendary weapons and armor inFallout 76. So, once and for all,Fallout 76needs to add the option to properly lock items in the player’s inventory to bring the misfortune caused by this missing feature to an end before mistakes get any worse.
