WARNING: The following article contains MAJOR Spoilers for the main story of Final Fantasy 14: Dawntrail.Final Fantasy 14producer and director Naoki Yoshida said in a Gamescom interview that the story of the game’s upcoming patches would focus on an artifact that players who finished the main story ofDawntrailwill know about. Yoshida also mentioned that charactersFinal Fantasy 14players meet inDawntrailwould see their background stories fleshed out, as well.

While the land of Tural was the primary focus of the first half ofDawntrail’s main story, the focus quickly pivoted to the sudden emergence of the kingdom of Alexandria in the lands north of Tuliyollal. After piercing the dome of lightning that surrounded Alexandria, the Warrior of Light and their allies sought to uncover the kingdom’s mysteries and the ones responsible for its incursion into Tural. This eventually led the Warrior and company tothe Ninth Shard that Alexandria came from, to a place called Living Memory that was known as the fabled “City of Gold” in Tural. After defeating Alexandria’s Endless ruler Queen Sphene, the Warrior obtained a chalice-shaped “Key” that was used to fuse Alexandria’s dimension with their home world.

AsFinal Fantasy 14players pondered about the Key recovered from Living Memory, Yoshida said that it would play a role in future tales. Inan interview with the German blog Crystal Universeat Gamescom, Yoshida said that the Key used by Alexandria will be used as the starting piece ofDawntrail’s upcoming story arc. While Yoshida did not elaborate further about how the Key would be used, he said that Square Enix’s priority is to keep a tangible element of surprise and excitement for players to discover. Yoshida also stated that some background stories ofcharacters players met inDawntrailwould be fleshed out further in the upcoming patches, but did not disclose which ones will be focused on first.

Yoshida also touched upon some things that players enjoyed, such as the Arcadion raid series. Although Yoshida admitted that the AAC Light-Heavyweight Tier’s Savage mode was cleared rather quickly compared to pastFinal Fantasy 14expansions, he said thatthe upcomingDawntrailraid challenges, such as Future’s Rewritten (Ultimate) in Patch 7.11, will be a major step up in difficulty.

AlthoughFinal Fantasy 14will soon celebrate its 11th anniversary, Yoshida said that community feedback will continue to be used to create enjoyable stories for years to come. Only time will tell where the story ofFinal Fantasy 14will take players next.
