Summary

Final Fantasy Remake Part 3will begin with Cloud and the party on a collision course with the true Sephiroth at the Northern Crater.Final Fantasy 7 RemakeandFinal Fantasy 7 Rebirthhave successfully emboldened many of the original title’s major moments and characters, with the trilogy granting plenty of room for extended narrative and combat sequences, especially in its final battles. With only one entry left in the trilogy,Final Fantasy Remake Part 3is tasked with tying uptheRemakeproject’s remaining loose ends, before what is sure to be a lengthy final clash between Cloud and Sephiroth. However, the originalFinal Fantasy 7’s final battle already includes a lengthy sequence of its own, raising questions as to how theRemaketrilogy’s final entry will handle the original sequence. After setting a clear precedent withRemakeandRebirth,Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 3needs to make one key decision with Sephiroth.

The originalFinal Fantasy 7’s final clash sees Cloud and Sephiroth battle across a variety of phases. While the final phase is impossible to lose, the title’s true final boss, Sefer/Safer Sephiroth, is a spectacular and cinematic challenge. Safer Sephiroth’s most devastating ability, Supernova, differs between the Japanese version and the international versions. Whereas the Japanese version of Supernova shows a still image before damaging the party, the international version includes a lengthy and spectacular animation of the Supernova destroying various planets and striking the sun, which then sends a shockwave toward the party. InFinal Fantasy 7 Remake Part 3, developer Square-Enix has the option to either lengthen Safer Sephiroth’s Supernova to fit the trend of past entries or keep it as is, with each choice posing potential benefits and risks to the overall experience.

The Case for an Extended Supernova in Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 3

Final Fantasy 7 RemakeandRebirtheach featured gloriously cinematic multi-phase boss battles to wrap up their respective narratives, and many expect the final entry in theRemakeproject,FF7 Remake Part 3,to up the ante. In the original title,Sephiroth’s Supernovais a galaxy-wide event. A massive blue energy shoots into the Milky Way galaxy, disintegrating Pluto, dissolving the rings of Saturn, and obliterating the entirety of Jupiter, before directly striking the sun. This impact sends out a shockwave, as the sun seemingly expands, engulfing Mercury, Venus, and, finally, the player’s party on Earth.FF7 Remake Part 3could break this attack, itself, into multiple combat phases. However, a far more compelling, and reasonable, option would be to see it applied as a narrative event.

Giventhe confluence of timelines inRebirth’s final act, and the dual nature of the title’s story, Sephiroth’s Supernova could be used to destroy one of the trilogy’s major timelines. The ability literally destroys a whole galaxy, but leaves party members with 1/16th of their HP. Perhaps upon striking the Earth, that timeline is obliterated, transporting the party to another, or even the original, timeline. What’s more, the party could have a certain amount of time before each Supernova hits a timeline, having to deal enough damage to clear the phase. Timed or not, the Supernova’s application in this way could be the core concept of Part 3’s final battle, with a certain amount of destruction, or timeline obliteration, marking the start of its respective phases.

The Case for a Traditional Supernova in Final Fantasy Remake Part 3

While Square-Enix could adapt Supernova to better fitRemakeandRebirth’s final boss formula, choosing to honor the original is equally compelling. Sephiroth’s Supernova is already a lengthy attack, and it’s highly probable that the actual battle withSephiroth inFF7 Remake Part 3will be quite extensive. Choosing to have Supernova play out over an updated, but largely unchanged, cinematic could be the way to go. Otherwise, Square-Enix could risk making the climactic battle feel bloated and overlong.

It remains to be seen just howFinal Fantasy 7 Remake Part 3will handle the final battle between Cloud and Sephiroth, as the previous two titles added substantial content to their conclusive bouts. However, the decision surrounding Sephiroth and his Supernova attack seems to be among the most impactful when adapting the original source material. Fans ofthe originalFinal Fantasy 7revere the Supernova as a showstopping display of power, and many expectPart 3’s version to reach the same heights. Until more news is shared aboutFinal Fantasy Remake Part 3and its direction, fans will need to wait patiently for the title’s official reveal.
