Since the blockbuster launch ofHelldivers 2early in 2024, developer Arrowhead has maintained close and often humorous ties with the game’s players, using the game’s “Galactic War” campaign system to further the in-game fiction that everyHelldivers 2player is a soldier of Super Earth, the game’s satirical fascist “democracy.” Using “Major Order” missions to channel player activity to specific points around the map, Arrowhead and its staff giveHelldivers 2players the impression of participating in a massive, never-ending war against Super Earth’s alien enemies. With the massiveHelldivers 2Escalation of Freedom update looming, in-game activity is surging once more as players prepare to check out new content.
And just ahead of the update, Arrowhead, in the guise of Super Earth Command, opted to non-consensually “reward” its players for failing a major order. In an announcement across all the game’s official channels, Super Earth Command declared that theHelldivers 2community had failed to accomplish the almost impossible major orderit issued on May 23, 2025. As a result, it would forcibly authorize the deployment of the new MD-17 Anti-Tank Mine Stratagem to all players' arsenals.
Helldivers 2 Major Order Failure Unlocks New Anti-Tank Mines Stratagem
The move by Arrowhead to foist the new weapons upon the player community finally brings an end to the long saga of the Anti-Tank Mines, one of the game’s longest running jokes. For months, Arrowhead has given players multiple opportunities to earn the Anti-Tank Mines Stratagem, only for players to either fail or collectively choose almost anything else. The first opportunity came during theChoohe/Penta Major Order, when players liberated Penta first to unlock the Airburst Rocket Launcher support weapon over the mines. Then players failed to complete a major order that would’ve unlocked the mines, leaving them unearned.
By that point, it had become a running joke among players that theHelldivers 2community was actively rejecting the MD-17 Anti-Tank Mines, taking every possible action to avoid unlocking them. This notion was underlined whenHelldivers 2players chose an objective with no material reward at all, rather than unlock the mines.Arrowhead honored their resolve with a large charity donation.
But the time for reckoning finally came forHelldivers 2players late on June 15, 2025, as the kill count objective was simply too high to be accomplished by the community. Now, whether they like it or not, players may choose to deploy the MD-17 Anti-Tank mines against their enemies.
