According to Games Workshop, Amazon’s anticipatedWarhammer 40,000movie and TV series are still not greenlighted because they are waiting for the video-on-demand streaming giant to work with them on the creative guidelines. Games Workshop discussed the deal granting Amazon exclusive rights toWarhammer 40,000TV seriesand film sets, with an option to license equivalent rights in the Warhammer Fantasy universe following the release of the initial production. In December 2023, the British company announced it would give Amazon a year, until December 2024, “to agree creative guidelines for the films and television series to be developed,“IGNreported.The company added that the agreement “will only proceed if the creative guidelines are mutually agreed between Games Workshop and Amazon.“Amazon is left with five months to make its final decision.
In February, Cavill spoke about the upcoming Amazon project, and he was as thrilled as his fellow fans about the anticipated live adaptation of his favorite miniature wargame, which many considered to be the foundational work of the grimdark genre. Hesaid, “It is the greatest privilege of my professional career to have this opportunity. I can’t say too much, again, it’s early days still. But to have this opportunity to bring it to screen, and be at the tiller so it can be faithful, is key to me.” According totheWitcherstar, he has lovedWarhammersince he was a boy and has been dealing with it since he was a kid, spending his free time daydreaming about its lore and universe, so being part of the live adaptation was special for him. AlthoughGames Workshopand Amazon haven’t agreed on the creative guidelines yet, chances are high that they will eventually do so before the year ends. It’s not a secret that many have been waiting for the live adaptation ofWarhammer 40,000, so Amazon will likely profit from it. Also, Cavill is very much involved in the project and has spoken about it in his previous interviews. He also posted about the project onInstagramin December 2022, announcing that they were looking for a filmmaker, creator and writer. Cavill also said that Amazon would give them the freedom to be true toWarhammer’smassive scope, making it the perfect home for the project, as he promised to bring fans something “familiar” and “fantastic.” Should Amazon decline, Games Workshop and Cavill can approach another streaming giant like Netflix to still materialize the projects. As for now, fans should wait and see what’s next and trust that Games Workshop will keep them in the loop, as the company has promised to give updates accordingly.
