Hogwarts Legacyis one of modern gaming’s biggest success stories, having sold 22 million units in 2023 despite being an ambitious game for a developer still proving its skills in the space. For the most part, it succeeded in its aim of immersing players in a well-realized take onthe world ofHarry Potter. Being sorted into a house, and finding a place in the iconic school is something that fans have wanted for years, and 2023 was the year it became a reality.
Each of the four houses has unique traits and bonuses, be it the side quests, or the more subtle inclusions that add up to make the experience more tailored to the player’s choice. Ravenclaw is generally understood to have drawn the shortest straw, though, and so using the sequel toHogwarts Legacyto conjure a great side character in Ravenclaw could correct the supposed imbalance.
Hogwarts Legacy’s Ravenclaw House was the Weakest
Of the four houses inHarry Potter, Ravenclaw is one of the most overlooked, despite being one of the most interesting. Named after Rowena Ravenclaw and home to characters like Luna Lovegood, Gilderoy Lockhart, and Cho Chang, it’s a house that champions wit, learning, and wisdom. To many, it’s a house that isn’t as memorable or respected as Gryffindor or Slytherin, but its characteristics are just as compelling, so it’s little wonder that plenty ofHogwarts Legacyplayers chose it in the game’s early stages.
Players meet Amit at Astronomy class, where Amit gifts the player his old telescope, allowing them to search for Astronomy Tables dotted around the world.
Sadly, the consensus seems to be that Ravenclaw is the least worthwhile house inHogwarts Legacy. Each house gets a dedicated side character to get to know, be it Sebastian in Slytherin, Poppy in Hufflepuff, or Natsai in Gryffindor, and though Ravenclaw students are introduced toRavenclaw’s Amit Thakkar, it feels like an afterthought in comparison. Amit just isn’t as interesting as his contemporaries, and doesn’t accompany players on their exclusive quest. Compared to the game’s best side character, the experience in Ravenclaw doesn’t hit the same height, soHogwarts Legacy 2could correct the issue by giving the blue house the best companion.
Sebastian’s Story in Hogwarts Legacy is a Highlight
Poppy Sweeting and Natsai Onai’s story arcs are fun distractions, but Sebastian Sallow’s journey rivals even the main campaign for how well it is presented. Seeing him go down a dark path, and choosing how far to go with him is masterful, and the family aspect of his motivations makes him one of the game’s few truly great and complex personalities.Ravenclaw didn’t get the same treatment inHogwarts Legacy, so giving something back to the large swathe of gamers who chose it could not only make it up to them, but it would also feel like an effective companion piece to the first game, and not a rehash.
Instead of picking a house in-game, players can also link their Harry Potter Fan Club and WB Games accounts inHogwarts Legacyto use the house they’ve already been sorted into.
Ravenclaw’s core personality traits are fascinating, and could be viable jumping off points for some intriguing narrative beats. Like Sebastian’s desperate effort to become more powerful,Hogwarts Legacy 2could use cues like the pursuit of knowledge or an obsession with answering a complicated question as a primary motivator, which would still adhere to the Ravenclaw way. To mimicSebastian’s stellar story inHogwarts Legacy, but tarring it with a Ravenclaw brush would give the overlooked house the in-depth story it deserves, while developing on one of the first game’s true highlights.
