Summary
The highly anticipated sequel to Team Cherry’s 2017 immensely popular MetroidvaniaHollow Knight,Hollow Knight: Silksong, is a deep well of memes at this point after being announced over five years ago and giving fans little to nothing to go on in terms of updates. Some have debatedHollow Knight: Silksong’s existence and whether its announcement was all part of some elaborate prank by Team Cherry, but the developer put those fears to rest when it confirmed the game’s development in March 2024. It was reportedly confirmed by a playtester in June 2024 thatSilksongis not in development hell, which is good news. However, with nothing concrete to stand on, fans are continuously growing impatient and increasingly doubtful thatSilksongwill ever see the light of day.
With all the skepticism and constant outspoken concerns about whetherHollow Knight: Silksongwill survive the battle it has long fought, it needs to do whatever it takes to earn itself some more goodwill ahead of its release. While the best route would arguably be to just launch as soon as possible, fans could at least use some trustworthy, comforting words from Team Cherry aboutSilksong’scurrent state of development. At the same time, this statement would need to be more than a mere explanation of whereSilksongis at on the development track, as fans will undoubtedly be waiting for a firm release window for the game as well.
Hollow Knight: Silksong Needs an Update and Release Window Announcement ASAP
Hollow Knight: Silksong Needs to Announce Its Release Window By the End of the Year
As the end of 2024 draws ever closer, it’s becoming more evident thatHollow Knight: Silksongwill not launch this year. Unless Team Cherry decides tostealth-dropSilksongin the latter half of the year, the lack of any formal updates on the game’s status means a 2024 release is most likely out of the question. However, even if it isn’t released by the end of the year, an official release window forSilksongshould be disclosed by the time 2024 comes to an end. At the very least, it could be officially confirmed whetherSilksongwill launch in 2025 or 2026.
Something to consider is thatSilksonghas been confirmed to be significantly larger than its predecessor, with 150 new enemies, plenty of challenging bosses, friendly NPCs to meet, and new towns, quests, tools, and secrets. It could very well be thatSilksongis the size ofElden Ringand Shadow of the Erdtreecombined at this point, with how long it has been in development. As such, it could still need more time in the oven. However, that doesn’t necessarily disqualify it from getting a release window.
Hollow Knight: Silksong at Least Needs a Detailed Update From Team Cherry
AssumingSilksongstill isn’t quite ready for a concrete release window, a more detailed update is in order for the game. Team Cherry has been open aboutSilksong’s development, confirming that it is, in fact, still in development. Nevertheless, perhaps a more specific statement would help put fans at ease — one that sets expectations or establishes a timeframe for the completion of the game. At the same time, it’s understandable why a developer might want to avoid setting any public deadlines, as the current climate has shown itself to be a rather merciless one.
Regardless of whether an update onHollow Knight: Silksongcomes soon or not, the hope is that it will accomplish what it initially set out to do. The firstHollow Knighthas proven to be one of thebest Metroidvania titles ever made, which meansSilksonghas a high bar to clear. In light of that, perhaps it should be shown a bit more mercy. On the other hand, the bait was set with its announcement five years ago, and it’s time to reel it in.
