TheFinal Fantasy 7 Remaketrilogy is approaching its finale, even if it may take a few years for it to be ready. Decades ofFinal Fantasy 7projects are going to be culminating in whateverFinal Fantasy 7 Remake Part 3turns out to be, so it has a lot riding on it, but theFF7community doesn’t currently have reasons to be concerned about it. 2024’sFinal Fantasy 7 Rebirthhas been a huge hit with fans, and hopes are high for the third part of the most ambitious video game remake yet.

Last time there was a wait betweenFF7Rentries, fans had options to keep them busy.Crisis Core: Final Fantasy 7got a lighter remake in the form ofCrisis Core Reunion, and the originalFinal Fantasy 7 Remakewas released on PS5 and PC with an extra DLC campaign. While it sounds likeDLC forFF7 Rebirthis out of the question, a PC port is likely, andFinal Fantasy 7: Ever Crisis’ lore additions have turned some heads. However, with an official statement thatCrisis Core Reunionmay be the last remade spin-off,FF7R Part 3is left with a lot of spin-off plotlines to tie up.

Final Fantasy 7’s Remaining Significant Spin-offs Aren’t Seeing Much Action

Back in 2022, a Famitsu interview with frequent Square Enix producer Yoshinori Kitase and director Tetsuya Nomura revealed that there wereno plans to remakeFinal Fantasy 7: Dirge of CerberusorFinal Fantasy 7: Before Crisis. Discussions of aDirge of Cerberusremaster had come up internally, with some thoughts paid toBefore Crisis, but that was all the information Square Enix had to offer at the time. Even if things have changed in the ensuing years, the chances for these two games to see the light of day again seem slim.

Why Before Crisis and Dirge of Cerberus Haven’t Returned

That goes double forBefore Crisis, which was a Japanese-only mobile prequel toFinal Fantasy 7released in 2004. As it was never localized and later got delisted from storefronts, this RPG focused on heroic Turks and Avalanche’s evil predecessor is likely to be left out ofFinal Fantasy 7’s ongoing narrative, especially withEver Crisisnow coveringFF7’s backstory. Meanwhile, the 2006 PS2 third-person shooterDirge of Cerberushas a better shot at returning someday, but it unfortunately overlaps with theFF7 Remaketrilogy itself as a sequel to the originalFF7.

How Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 3 Could Incorporate Before Crisis and Dirge of Cerberus

If Square Enix isn’t remaking these spin-offs, then it falls toFinal Fantasy 7 Remake Part 3to incorporate their outstanding story elements. Before Crisiscould be referenced as the Turks’ and Avalanche’s shared history, especially if the rest of Avalanche appears alongside apotential new Wutai war inFF7R Part 3. Unfortunately, because ofBefore Crisis’ present unavailability, it will likely be stuck with the least references and borrowed concepts of anyCompilation of Final Fantasy 7project. Setting aside whatever else comes forward fromCrisis Core, like Angeal or Genesis, that just leavesDirge of Cerberus.

Dirge of Cerberus Should Play A Big Role In FF7R Part 3

Fortunately, the end of Yuffie and Sonon’s encounter withDeepground inFF7R’s Intermission DLCsuggests that at least Nero will return as a major foe for Yuffie in the inevitable Midgar revisit.

FF7 Rebirthteased the presence of Vincent’s Chaos powers, which were expounded on inDirgeand could be key to undoing Sephiroth’s fate-warping plans. The aforementioned Genesis is also being contained alongside Deepground, andFF7R Part 3would be the last chance to wrap up his storyline. At any rate, the return to Midgar inFinal Fantasy 7 Remake Part 3will likely be an exciting trip forDirge of Cerberusfans, even ifBefore Crisishopefuls are disappointed once again.
