Summary
Horizon Forbidden Westpresents the second installment in theHorizonfranchise, as Aloy’s journey continues. TheBurning ShoresDLC later brought an extra chapter toHorizon Forbidden West, taking Aloy to a long gone version of what was once the city of Los Angeles.Burning Shoresoffered exciting new exploration, but it also introduced a brand-new character into Aloy’s life: Seyka.
Seyka is a headstrong and compassionate Quen Marine who eventually becomes a companion to Aloy. However,Seyka also plays another important role in theForbidden WestDLC, as she’s the first character Aloy has developed true romantic feelings for throughout the series. Aloy and Seyka’s bond grows as they work together to take down Walter Londra. Despite this romantic partnership being a surprising turn for Aloy, the connection between her and Seyka was actually hidden in plain sight all along.
Horizon Teased Aloy and Seyka’s Connection From the Start
Aloy’s Nickname and Seyka’s Clothing Hold Deeper Meanings
One of Aloy’s nicknames given to her throughout her journey is Flamehair. This moniker is clearly given because of the character’s bright red hair, but the name eventually holds a lot more weight than one might think at first. The nickname given to Aloy deeply ties intoher relationship with Seyka, and the connection lies in the latter’s clothing.
Seyka’s clothing, specifically her cape, resembles a moth. The overall design is wonderfully subtle, but the cape is a clear sign that Seyka’s outfit is directly inspired by moths. It’s well known that moths are attracted to flames and bright light, which makes Seyka and Aloy’s relationship seem a lot more obvious in hindsight.Seyka’s outward appearance is carefully designed, and her moth-like clothing is a perfect example of the thought and care that went into her creation.
One of Aloy’s many nicknames, the label Flamehair was given to her by Petra.
These subtle clues laid out by Guerrilla Games are beautifully crafted hints that lead toward a much bigger pay-off. Although the decision to romance her is optional,Seyka is an integral part of Aloy’s growththroughout theBurning ShoresDLC, which makes the fiery red hair and moth clothing still incredibly meaningful, no matter what choice the player makes. Seyka allows Aloy to become more open as a person, as the bonds of these characters make them important fixtures in each other’s lives after what they have been through together.
Seyka and Aloy’s Relationship Revealing Another Side to Horizon’s Protagonist
As flames and moths are complimentary to one another and have an interesting symbiotic relationship, so are Aloy and Seyka. Although some criticism claims that the relationship inBurning Shoresfeels forced, hints are given in the story right from the beginning.Burning Shoreshighlighted the importance of several charactersin Aloy’s life, and although Seyka is new to her growing list of companions, she is someone Aloy needs in order to grow as a person. The relationship may feel rushed to some because of how quickly the two seem to bond, but that’s how a moth and a flame work. The moth is immediately drawn into the flame.
It’s unclear wherethe thirdHorizongamewill take Aloy next. Furthermore, it’s unknown how big of a role Seyka will play in the third installment. Being the moth to Aloy’s flame, it would be shocking if she wasn’t a major companion in the next game, but only time will tell. If Aloy’s journey continues into a third chapter, it will be compelling to see where Guerrilla Games takes the relationship and how the developer will further expand Aloy and Seyka’s flame and moth imagery.
