Summary
Star Wars Outlaws' space flight has been one of its most talked about features, especially after Bethesda’sStarfieldattempted to provide an innovative and immersive space flight experience. Unfortunately,Starfield’s space explorationand combat have largely fallen short of expectations due to the amount of attention players are encouraged to give to their ships when there are an overwhelming number of loading screens and plenty of empty, uneventful space between planets, as well as countless monotonous dogfights that generally only amount to unwanted interruptions. Thankfully,Star Wars Outlawshas managed to be a bit of a different story in that regard.
Star Wars Outlawsdoesn’t put players in space as much asStarfielddoes, but there is still plenty to say about it in light ofStarfield’s shortcomings. While it is far from perfect,Star Wars Outlaws’ space flight takes the bones ofStarfield’s and adds some necessary polish to it to make a much more intuitive and fulfilling experience.
Comparing Star Wars Outlaws' Space Flight to Starfield’s
Star Wars Outlaws' Space Flight Lacks Starfield’s Loading Screens
At the forefront of the discourse aboutStarfield’s space flight is its abundance of loading screens. From planet to planet, there are loading screens between each planet’s surface and the space above it, and even more loading screens when players grav jump from one system to the next. It is possible to fly between planets inStarfieldwithout loading screens, but it takes an enormous amount of time that the vast majority of players aren’t willing to spend for the sake of a more immersive experience.Star Wars Outlaws, on the other hand, lacks these loading screens for what appear to be seamless transitions between every major location.
Rather than traditional loading screens,Star Wars Outlawshas loading zones, where the content for the upcoming area is loaded as the Trailblazer is shown flying through a planet’s atmosphere. This allows players to have the immersive experience thatStarfieldaspired to offer but ultimately fell short of. On the topic of immersion,Star Wars Outlawslacks the immersive first-person modeprovided byStarfield’s space flight.
However, perhapsStar Wars Outlawsmakes up for this with much more to look at in its space zones thanStarfield, like plenty of natural and manmade debris for players to evade as they fly through.
Star Wars Outlaws Space Flight and Combat Is Much More Intuitive and Responsive Than Starfield’s
One of the most significant downsides ofStarfield’s space flight is the unresponsive nature of its controls, which is brought even more into light byStar Wars Outlaws. InStarfield, it truly can feel at times like the player’s ship is a hunk of heavy steel that, for some reason, isn’t made weightless by the absence of gravity in space. It often feels as though it takes an eternity just to turn a ship 180 degrees inStarfield, which frequently leads to enemy ships getting the jump on the player. Of course, this can be lightly remedied byStarfield’s ship customization, but the finished product is rarely comparable to the fluid movement ofStar Wars Outlaws' Trailblazer.
InStar Wars Outlaws, the Trailblazer is very easy to maneuver thanks to the responsiveness of its controls, down to accelerating and stopping occurring almost immediately upon the press of a key or button. This is especially noticeable in combat, as it allows players to keep ahead of their enemies much more than they can inStarfield. Objects in space are also much easier to evade inStar Wars Outlawssince the Trailblazer can turn on a dime, unlikeStarfield’s ships, which require regular acceleration and deceleration to make rapid movements.
All in all,Star Wars Outlaws' space flight hasStarfield’s beat by a long shot. With no traditional loading screens and much more fluid controls, space flight and combat inStar Wars Outlawsis preferable toStarfield.
