Summary

Last week,Battlefield 2042announced aDead Spacecrossover as the first-person shooter’s final season comes to a close. The crossover was a surprising addition toBattlefield 2042, and it’s proven to be a divisive collaboration between the two franchises. Although there were some excited to see some semblance ofDead Spacein a new light, the general feedback about the crossover has been fairly negative.

Much of the criticism ofBattlefield’s 2042’s crossover withDead Spaceis that it simply doesn’t feel likeBattlefield. The first-person shooter franchise has a long history with realism, andDead Spacedoesn’t exactly fall into that category. Furthermore, this isn’t the way many were hoping to see newDead Spacecontent, as hopes for aDead Space 2remake persist. All of these criticisms are completely valid, butBattlefield 2042may actually be the perfect stage to host aDead Spacecrossover like this.

Embracing Fun as Battlefield 2042 Comes to an End

ThroughoutBattlefield’s long history,Battlefield 2042was an interesting concept that unfortunately fell flat.Battlefieldhas a reputation for its realistic gameplay and exploration of historical settings, butBattlefield 2042tried to do something differentand imagine what the future of war might look like. Unfortunately, the game launched to mixed reviews, with the main complaints from players revolving around bugs and the game ultimately feeling unfinished.

After three years of lackluster response and trying to redeem itself, EA announced thatSeason 7 ofBattlefield 2042would be its last. The game will still continue to get the occasional special events and updates, but the majority of the game’s support is over. This is the main reason why aDead Spaceevent is understandable. Now thatBattlefield 2042will no longer have consistent support, it’s a great time for the game’s developers to have fun with it.

Battlefield 2042 2

When it comes to criticism of theDead Spacecrossover ignoring the franchise’s embrace of realistic elements, there is at least comfort inthe nextBattlefieldaiming to increase realism. If the nextBattlefieldproject is going to return to form with realistic mechanics and stories,Battlefield 2042is the perfect game to experiment with more outlandish ideas.Battlefield 2042developer DICE saw a window of opportunity to do something fun and outside the box, so it took it. Yes, it takes the realism out ofBattlefield 2042, but for a game that’s set 20 years in the future and is completely speculating on what war will look like (and a game that already has a few wacky skins and bold characters), this title in the franchise makes the most sense to feature aDead Spaceevent.

Battlefield’s Future Can Bring the Franchise Back to Its Roots

The future games in theBattlefieldfranchise will have plenty of opportunities to bring the franchise back to its realistic roots. Only time will tell if EA’s Ripple Effect Studios succeeds at this return to form with the next game, but the developer consulting with real life veterans is a promising sign. It’s beena rocky road forBattlefield 2042since its launch back in 2021, and the game’s developer support coming to an end means the stakes aren’t nearly as high anymore.Battlefield 2042 is in the perfect position to be a ground for experimentation.

This may not have been theDead Spacecontent some were hoping for or theBattlefield 2042event a lot of players were expecting, but the week-long crossover may find its audience for those who are looking for a change of pace. As anticipation forthe nextBattlefieldgamebuilds, it will be interesting to see how much the new title in the series differs from itsBattlefield 2042predecessor.
