Summary

When it comes to picking a main villain forMarvel’s Wolverine, there are countless great options Insomniac can use. Being a core member of the X-Men, Wolverine has crossed paths with a smorgasbord of villains over the years, ranging from household names like Magneto, to lesser-known villains like the Silver Samurai. If Insomniac follows a pattern from itsSpider-Manseries, then no matter whoMarvel’s Wolverinechooses as its big bad, it’s sure to be an iconic portrayal in the end.

In the leaked documents that surfaced soon after the illegalInsomniac hack last year, it was heavily implied that X-Men mainstay Mister Sinister would be taking on the role ofMarvel’s Wolverine’s main adversary. While that might still turn out to be true, that doesn’t mean he’ll be the only villain in store, especially if Insomniac’s past track record is anything to go by.

Insomniac’s Track Record Shows a Penchant for Dual Villains

Insomniac’s first foray into the Marvel universe, 2018’sMarvel’s Spider-Manput Mr. Negative front and center of all the game’s pre-release marketing, right alongside some more classic members of the Sinister Six. When fans finally got their hands onMarvel’s Spider-Man, they soon realized that Mr. Negative wasn’t the game’s only primary villain, withDoc Ock’s originplaying out over the course of the story.

Last year,Marvel’s Spider-Man 2featured a similar approach with its own story. For around two-thirds of its runtime, Kraven the Hunter is the primary threat ofMarvel’s Spider-Man 2’s story, killing off vital members of Spidey’s rogues' gallery. But towards the end ofSpider-Man 2, Venom takes his full form, consuming Harry Osborn and trying to turn New York City into his own Symbiote paradise.

EvenSpider-Man: Miles Morales– a much shorter adventure than the two mainline entries on either side of it – featured two main bad guys, with The Tinkerer acting as the main villain, and Roxxon/Prowler acting as the underlying threat driving the game’s narrative and action forward. So, if Insomniac’s last few games are any indication, it seems likely thatMarvel’s Wolverinewill feature more than one main villain.

Villains Who Could Accompany Mister Sinister in Insomniac’s X-Men

While Sabretooth, Mystique, Omega Red, and Lady Deathstrike all appeared in the Insomniac leaks and would make for greatvillains inMarvel’s Wolverine, there’s a possibility that none of them actually play a primary role as a villain, but instead act as supporting cast members, and maybe one-off boss fights. Instead,Marvel’s Wolverine’s potential second main villain might not have been leaked yet at all.

If that’s the case, then there are plenty of X-Men villains who could work alongsideMister Sinister inMarvel’s Wolverine. Some of the most obvious picks would be any of the Marauders, a group of super-powered mercenaries that Mister Sinister created to hunt down various Mutants and factions that he deems troublesome. Some great picks from the Marauders would be the mind-possessing Malice or the ruthless mechanical-manipulator Greycrow.

Another interesting pick – especially in light of recent pieces of Marvel media likeX-Men ‘97– would be Gambit. Gambit’s uncontrollable Mutant powers led him to seek out Mister Sinister, who after removing a piece of his brain tissue, forced him into service as the Marauder’s leader. It’s not an origin that many newer fans are aware of, and it’s a storyline that could give Insomniac an incredibly unique villain forMarvel’s Wolverine.
