This article contains spoilers from Jujutsu Kaisen’s Shinjuku Showdown Arc.

Megumi Fushiguro is one of the main characters inJujutsu Kaisen.Alongside Gojo, Nobara, and Yuji, he makes up the main main unit in the series that drives the story forward, and, for any character with a role as big as him, it is easy to understand why he has so many fans. In fact, Megumi is widely known to be one of the most popular characters inJujutsu Kaisen, even having the most popularity poll wins in the franchise.

Much of Megumi’s popularity is down to the incredible role that he plays in the story, and the fact that he is arguably much more interesting than even the protagonist, Yuji Itadori. Up until one point, Megumi had everything that Yuji had, but in the latter half, the handling of this character was far from perfect by the author, especially towards the end of the series. Megumi failed to fulfill the expectations of the fans in many ways, and withJujutsu Kaisen’send closing in, the character arc has essentially ended in a way where fans are largely dissatisfied.

Megumi Fushiguro tells Yuji Itadori that he’s going to kill him if he dies again.

Megumi’s Incredible Potential Set Up Some Very Intriguing Plot Points

Megumi Fushiguro was always known to be one of the strongestJujutsu sorcerers of the next generation. This does not come as a surprise to any fan, because Megumi was Gojo’s very own student. Yuji himself would go on to become one of the strongest of all time, and that was established quite early in the series. Similarly, it was also established at Megumi would be relative to Yuji and, at the same time, be among the strongest in the series. If that wasn’t enough, Megumi was then revealed to be a prized individual of the Zenin family, and the wielder of the 10 Shadows Technique. This incredibly overpowered inherited technique was wielded by him to the best of his abilities, and fans saw him grow consistently stronger over the years.

Learn to be more selfish, Megumi! – Gojo

Although Megumi was quick to sacrifice himself, his character arc saw him grow beyond that and become more selfish in an attempt to grow stronger. Megumi certainly progressed greatly in the early parts of Jujutsu Kaisen, and fans certainly loved that. At the same time, fans also know that Megumi’s quest to become even more selfish and strong eventually led to him gaining newer abilities, such as a Domain Expansion. Clearly, Megumi was destined to be incredibly powerful, and fans knew that he had a great future carved out for himself by the author. In fact, even Gojo, the Strongest Modern Sorcerer, mentioned that Megumi has the potential to be as strong as him in the future.

He drew this comparison by stating that once, a former user of the Six Eyes and the Limitless was evenly matched in battle by a user of the 10 Shadows Technique, and that just goes to show what level Megumi could hit in the future.

Megumi’s Growth And Fall In JJK

Megumi’s Growth Was Stunted As Sukuna Took Over

Megumi Fushiguro certainly did show growth in Jujutsu Kaisen. While, at first, his growth was rather slow, once he started noticing Yuji’s tremendous powers and incredibly fast growth rate, he realized that he couldn’t afford to be left behind. Megumi then worked incredibly hard and eventually reached a high level of strength where he even manifested a domain expansion. Megumi was able to deal with the finger bearer, and later down the line, in the Culling Game, he showcased what he was truly capable of by taking on many powerful Ancient Sorcerers and holding his own against them, satisfying many fans along the way.

Fans have always had high expectations from Megumi Fushiguro. However, these expectations fell short at the end of things, because Megumi was not treated the way fans expected him to be at the end of the story.

Just let it end already. – Megumi

Simply put, Megumi Fushiguro was taken over by Sukuna, in an attempt to reincarnate and destroy society as he knew it. Sukuna certainly succeeded in taking control of his body, and then, he crushed everything that Megumi held dear. Magumi’s very own sister was killed, and at the same time,Yuji Itadori, his best friend, was put in a state of distress. Megumi even killed his own Sensei, Gojo, and that certainly was heartbreaking for him.

Megumi essentially gave up the will to live. When a helping hand was provided to him, he rejected it, which just meant that he simply wanted to die. Every bit of hope that the fans had for this character were shattered by the author, and essentially, Megumi received absolutely no progression in terms of his own character arc for around 2 years in the story.

Megumi’s Unfulfilled Role In Jujutsu Kaisen And The Downfall Of The Character

Megumi Was Cast Aside And Cut Out Of the Story

At the end of the Shinjuku showdown Arc, Megumi Fushiguro was spoken to by Yuji once again. Once Yuji opened his domain, he managed to make contact with Megumi, and as he did that, he touched his soul. By doing that, Yuji essentially gave Megumi hope again, and so he decidedto fight back against the King of Curses. Megumi allowed for Yuji to deliver a powerful attack, and as he did that, Nobara joined the battle as well. These three then combine to create the perfect scenario for Sukuna to fall, and essentially, the death of the king of curses came next.

While Sukuna fell, Megumi was liberated and, ever since then, he has been free. However, Megumi’s own character arc wad completely butchered by the author. He did not go on to meet the potential that he had, and in fact, even his cursed technique, along with much else about him, remains half-baked.Megumi doesn’t even know how to utilize his technique properly, and it is absolutely shameful that the King of Curses, who was in his body until recently, used his own techniques better than him. Similarly, his domain expansion, Chimera Shadow Garden, is the same as it was when it was introduced in the story at the very beginning, and, all the potential that he had to become a very strong sorcerer simply went to waste.

While Megumi did survive Shinjuku Showdown, and eventually went on to become a strong sorcerer, fans did not get to see any of his growth, which was stunted by the author, and at the same time, his importance in the story dwindled greatly as well.Megumi was simply there for Yuji to save, and beyond that, he offered nothing in the last Arc of the series, with his role being greatly diminished.

Now,Jujutsu Kaisenis near its very end, and fans know for a fact that the story is ending in the next 3 weeks or so. JJK’s end means that many characters in the story did not get what they desired and what fans expected of them, and that truly is a shame.
