This article contains spoilers from Kaiju No. 8 chapter 112.
The next chapter ofKaiju No. 8has been released, andKaiju No. 8Chapter 112is sweeping fans of the monster-fighting world off their feet. Kicking things back into gear following Mina Ashiro’s retrieval of her sniper rifle, the Anti-Kaiju Defense Force’s Third Division Captain launched her counterattack on Kaiju No. 9, while Kafka Hibino continued to engage in close-range combat using his Kaiju No. 8 form. While their opponent quickly adapted to the change in pace and the different fighting styles being thrown at him, there was no preparation for what was coming next. Preparing for their next move, Kafka and Mina may have just one shot left to save the world.
August’s first chapter ofKaiju No. 8continues to deliver fast-paced and brutal action, with Kaiju No. 9frustrating the Anti-Kaiju Defense Forceand coming up with an answer to each of their attempts. As the remaining members of the Defense Force continue to hold off the many honju and kaiju-level threats, the team of Mina and Kafka are likely the only two members of the team that can realistically bring down Kaiju No. 8. In doing so, the hope is that the other kaiju and honju terrorizing the city will cease operations and return to their natural habitat, losing the influence of Kaiju No. 9 and the will to battle the Anti-Kaiju Defense Force.
Mina Ashiro Leads The Counterattack
The Anti-Kaiju Defense Force Turn The Tables On Kaiju No. 9
Picking things right back up fromKaiju No. 8 Chapter 111, Mina has now taken control ofher Anti-Giant-Class Kaiju Rail Gunand is in a perfect position to launch an assault. As the Third Division Captain of the Anti-Kaiju Defense Force, Mina’s 98% combat power and utilization of long-ranged weapons makes her the Third Division’s best bet at taking down giant-class kaiju. While she pales in comparison to Soshiro Hoshina’s mastery against medium-sized kaiju, Mina excels at blasting away the biggest and scariest monsters that attack the city, and is capable of firing off her sniper rifles from extremely faraway distances, nailing them with precision and destroying their core.
Mina did everything she could to hold off Kaiju No. 9 long enough for Kafka to arrivewhile using his Kaiju No. 8 formto even the playing field, but she still came close to the brink of death. After being saved by Kafka, Mina made a break for it and got into position to equip herself with the new weapon and begin to support Kafka. The duo perfectly suit one another’s weaknesses, as Mina is at her best when she relies on her incredible combat power to fire off powerful weapons, while Kafka is more at home with a face-to-face battle, relying on his high fortitude level and the ability to throw hands and knock the head clean off of kaiju bodies.
Now they’ll shatter my core with another alternative form move. Magnificent! - Kaiju No. 9
The operation, at first glance, was to destroy Kaiju No. 9 with one blast from Mina’s weapon, as she had done so many times before. Incredibly, the duo of Kafka and Mina had already determined that this strategy wouldn’t be effective against Kaiju No. 9, who has shown incredible intelligence throughout the battle, and can adapt on the fly and make any fighting style he learns completely useless to use against him. Instead, the blast fired from Mina’s gun was a two-part move, with the first serving as a distraction, and the second to expose his core long enough for Kafka to take advantage.
The Return Of The General
General Shinomiya Makes His Presence Felt
The main issue with this strategy is that, should it not work,Kaiju No. 9 would use his regenerative powersand hide his core. During his attempt, Kaiju No. 9 ran into a problem when he believed his Kaiju No. 2 power, inherited after absorbing General Isao Shinomiya, was rejecting his use. General Shinomiya may have been caught in the belly of the beast, but there seems to be signs of life after Shinomiya began to rebel against Kaiju No. 9, despite remaining in his body. This wouldn’t be the first timeKaiju No. 8has shown its audience the possibility of a rebellion, as Kafka himself did the same during his fight against Shinomiya, taking back control and turning off the Kaiju No. 8 powers.
The beautiful panels showcase the rebellion of Shinomiya through captivating images of Kaiju No. 9 being crushed under the weight of Shinomiya’s strength. While the portrayal was subliminal and not occurring in the physical realm, it helps paint the picture that Kaiju No. 9 cannot control Shinomiya forever. Facing this rejection, Kaiju No. 9 is also faced with a harsh realization that his regeneration is no longer functioning as it normally does, leaving his core continuously exposed. Mina’s blast was a successful first step to defeating Kaiju No. 9, but the final step falls into the hands of Kafka. With the core exposed, he’ll have one chance to destroy it and defeat Kaiju No. 9.
The reveal of Shinomiya still being present inside Kaiju No. 9 also brings up the possibility that he is still alive and can be saved after the battle. Mina herself was absorbed by Kaiju No. 9, and the audience got to see a first-hand look at what it means to be trapped inside the body of a kaiju. Mina wasn’t inside for nearly as long as Shinomiya, but the one aspect that was learned is that the stronger the willpower of the person, the more likely they are to survive the ordeal. It’s been projected many times throughout the chapters leading up toKaiju No. 8 Chapter 112that Shinomiya isthe strongest member of the Defense Force, and he may very well still be by the end of this fight.
The Exposure Of Kaiju No. 9’s Core
The Cliffhanger Leaves Kaiju No. 9’s Defeat In Question
The core of Kaiju No. 9 remains exposed thanks to the efforts of Shinomiya’s rejection and the opening left behind by Mina’s shot. Kafka also has one more trick left up his sleeve, and with the opening he now has, he wisely chose this as the perfect time to pull it out. Firing up his fortitude to the maximum level, Kafka unleashes his Alternative Sixth Form, known as the Neo God of Thunder attack. The physicalstrength of Kaiju No. 8’s poweris used in a thunderous punch directly landing to Kaiju No. 9’s core, and making an impact strong enough to send a blast and vibrations around their surroundings. Successfully landing the blow, it remains to be seen whether this was the decisive attack or if Kaiju No. 9 managed to survive.
Despite the uncertainty, Kaiju No. 9 remarked how impressive the battle had become, pointing out that the humans he was fighting continued to surpass his expectations. Like the audience has seen before, this kaiju also appears to take pleasure in battling an opponent as strong and capable of himself, despite having aspirations of global domination. It appears that Kaiju No. 9 views his current opponents from the Anti-Kaiju Defense Force as the strongest humans in existence, which bodes well for him if he is successful in taking them down. A victory for Kaiju No. 9 would almost guarantee his takeover of the world and form a kaiju-dominated life.
The cliffhanger ending to the chapter leaves many questions unanswered, including whether Kaiju No. 9 has been taken down or not. If so, will General Shinomiya be rescued at the same time? There is also the hope that if Kaiju No. 9 is destroyed, the other kaiju and honju destroying the city will lose their manipulation of Kaiju No. 9 and stop fighting the Anti-Kaiju Defense Force. If this isn’t the case, will the remaining Officers and Platoon Leaders be strong enough to hold them off until the Captains and Vice-Captains can arrive for support?Kaiju No. 8 Chapter 113will hopefully have some of these answers, and the potential end to its greatest threat.
