TheBorderlandsmovie is a loose interpretation of the lore but they get some bullet points right. Roland goes to a space prison to break out Tiny Tina and in the breakout, Krieg gets out as well. The three disappear into the ether when Lilith comes into play. Upon bringing in a bounty, she is confronted by Atlas agents who want to hire her for a job: to get Tiny Tina back.

For a good paycheck, Lilith agrees to find Tiny Tina and the adventure begins. TheBorderlandsmovie is full of fun references and it wraps up quite a few stories too. It also leaves many questions behind, so let’s go through the big ones that could be answered in a sequel.

Deukalian Atlas in the Borderlands movie

6Did Deukalian Atlas Survive?

The Destroyer May Not Destroy All

Deukalian Atlas was a new character created for the movie. He served as theCEO of Atlas, one of the many corporations plaguing the galaxy in theBorderlandsfranchise. Since the film borrowed from the first two games instead of stuck to just one game, fans may have wondered why they didn’t use a more re of usable CEO as the villain i.e. Handsome Jack.

Not only was he the villain fromBorderlands 2, but he was also a playable character inBorderlands: The Pre-Sequel. Why the movie team created Deukalian Atlas instead ofusing Handsome Jackis a mystery but so is his fate. Did The Destroyer within The Vault kill Deukalian Atlas or will he rise again but in a more deformed manner? If he doesn’t return, what will happen to Atlas?

Commander Knoxx in the Borderlands movie

5The Setup For General Knoxx Is Strong

Roland And His History With The Crimson Lance

There is another switch in the villain department within the movie. One of theBorderlandsDLC villains, General Knoxx, is absent in all but name. His daughter, Commander Knoxx who is made up for the movie, takes his place. Thanks to Deukalian Atlas, she dies by his hands once she has a change of heart facing Roland.

It should be clear to most viewers that Commander Knoxx and Roland had a thing within The Crimson Lance. Now that she’s dead, it feels like that mystery may never be lifted although Roland still has a lot to explain for. Why did he leave The Crimson Lance, for example? Are there more soldiers than General Knoxx who will go after Roland? He may or may not seek revenge on Roland, thinking he killed his daughter instead of Deukalian Atlas.

The Vault in the Borderlands movie

4What Exactly Was In The Vault?

Looking Beyond The Destroyer And Shiny Blue Walls

There’s another thing about The Vault that doesn’t make sense. When they go inside, it just looks like a blue vortex. Are those blue rocks supposed to be valuable? Where is theexplosion of guns and other loot like in theBorderlandsgames?

Also, if that room was it then where was that monster, presumably The Destroyer, hiding? The group could have left The Vault too early and there may have been more rooms somewhere else. That may have been Lilith’s biggest mistake in thinking she tricked Deukalian Atlas into death by leaving it there with the monster. He could return even stronger than ever before but only a sequel can spell that out for sure.

Claptrap in the Borderlands movie

3Are There Other Claptrap Units Out There?

One Is The Loneliest Number

Claptrap is the name given to all robotic unitslike the character in the film. It’s a nickname making it confusing to discuss one Claptrap over another from the games. In the movie though, Jack Black’s version is the only one known and this Claptrap seems to think he is literally the last of his kind.

Is this true or is there more hiding somewhere in the galaxy? It’s not hard to imagine Gearbox green-lighting a Claptrap spinoff akin toThe Minionsfranchise. Both sets of characters appeal to kids with wild language and they are also both yellow. It would almost be silly if there wasn’t a Claptrap spinoff in the future examining the poor existence of these fast-talking robots.

2Are There More Clones Of Tiny Tina?

Deukalian Atlas Could Have Created An Army

There are a lot of lore changes in theBorderlandsfilm but perhaps the biggest pertains to Tiny Tina. From the start, it is revealed that Deukalian Atlas is her father which is not the case in the games. What later gets revealed is that Tiny Tina was made in a lab using blood leftover from an Eridian fragment that Deukalian Atlas found.

His team of scientists seemed to think that they could return the race to prominence through Tiny Tina and createa new Sirento open The Vault on Pandora. Later still, Deukalian Atlas drops that Tiny Tina was not alone. She had many sisters and what isn’t revealed is whether or not Tiny Tina is the last survivor. Are there other clones out there or was Tiny Tina the very last of her line of clones?

Lilith in the Borderlands movie

1Are There Other Sirens Out There?

Lilith’s Quest To Find Her Kind

Tiny Tina wasnot a Siren, just a girl, and instead, Lilith was revealed to be a Siren. It’s a mystical race of female warriors, and there is one playable in almost every game in the franchise. The only exception isBorderlands: The Pre-Sequel.

Even though Lilith is only playable in the first game, she still has a presence in the sequels as an NPC and a top dog among her people. Maya was the Siren inBorderlands 2and Amara was the Siren inBorderlands 3. Will Maya and Amara show up in a sequel or are there any other Sirens out there besides Lilith? That may be the more poignant question.
