The upcomingMario & Luigi: Brothershipwill be the first game in the long-running RPG series that is not developed by AlphaDream.Mario & Luigi: Brothershipwas announced at the big June 2024 Nintendo Direct event. It was, in fact, the very first game shown off by Nintendo, setting the tone for what would be one of the most exciting Nintendo Direct presentations in years.
TheMario & Luigi: Brothershiptrailerconfirmed a huge leap forward for the series' graphics, with the game adopting a cartoony, cel-shaded art style as opposed to the more pixelated look used in previous entries. Even so, the game appears to be retaining much of what made theMario & Luigiseries so popular to begin with, but it’s also venturing into uncharted territory.
In 2003, AlphaDream releasedMario & Luigi: Superstar Sagaon the Game Boy Advance, the first game in the series. This was followed byPartners in TimeandBowser’s Inside Story, with all three games earning critical acclaim. Follow-upsMario & Luigi: Dream TeamandMario & Luigi: Paper Jamstill earned mostly positive reviews, but were not as well-received as their predecessors. Unfortunately,developer AlphaDream filed for bankruptcy in 2019, meaningthe upcomingMario & Luigi: Brothershipis being made by a different developer. The specific developer working onMario & Luigi: Brothershiphas not been revealed by Nintendo at the time of this writing, but fans have offered some theories.

Two of the more popular theories is thatMario & Luigi: Brothershipis being made by Grezzo or Next Level Games. Grezzo has worked on major Nintendo projects in the past, including the 3DS version ofLuigi’s Mansionand the Switch remake ofThe Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening, the latter of which is having its art style continued in the upcomingLegend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom. Next Level Games,which was acquired by Nintendo in 2021, is currently working onLuigi’s Mansion 2 HDfor the Switch, but there are those who believe that the studio also has a hand inMario & Luigi: Brothership.
Until Nintendo decides to reveal the developer ofMario & Luigi: Brothershipitself, all fans can do is guess as to who is behind the new game. Regardless,fans are clearly hyped aboutMario & Luigi: Brothership, and many will be looking forward to playing the game come its launch on November 7, even though AlphaDream is longer at the wheel.
