Marvelhas a lot of comic book characters that have been around for a while, and even though they were successful upon their original releases, they haven’t received a reboot yet. Curiously enough, some of them have made small cameos in movies or series, so they’re still fresh in the memory of the fans, although they are yet to receive a modern re-version.
From a kick-ass amazon, to a reluctant vampire detective, all these characters are raw diamonds, waiting to be taken and polished by expert hands. Let’s take a look at five of these forgotten but interesting Marvel characters.
5Thundra
The mightiest warrioress from the United Sisterhood Republic, a matriarchal society where women are the absolute rulers. As an inhabitant of Earth-713, Thundra boasts the strongest powers from that reality andhas come to Earth-616 on many occasions, although she’s yet to be highlighted in her own series from the present continuity.
Her abilities include extreme reflexes, strength, durability, superhuman metabolism, and healing factor, although less than what we see incharacters like Wolverine and Deadpool. Throughout her career, Thundra has been a recurrent ally of the Fantastic Four, She-Hulk, and even Spiderman (in the Ultimate animated series).
4Diabolique
A human demon hybrid, born and raised to be a powerful magic user. Diane Bolick is an eternal child, a girl who never grows despite the passing of years, and was often misunderstood or taken under the wing of some of the most heinous dark magic users in Earth 616.
Her powers are tremendously strong, not only her ability to control magic (and often demonic) familiars but her dimensional manipulation and energy manipulation aresecond only to Scarlet Witch. Sadly, this great character has appeared sporadically as a side character, sometimes being an antagonist and sometimes an ally. A pity, since she could totally use a full reboot and her own series.
3Modred the Mystic
Modred is an ancient magician, a subordinate of the Elder Gods, a contemporary to King Arthur himself, and one of the first users of the Darkhold. However, with great power comes great sacrifice, and Cthon, the Dark God himself forces him to be his subordinate in exchange forrevealing the secrets of the ancient dark magicbook.
After millennia in suspended animation, Modred resurrects in the 20th century, and throughout his many crazy adventures, he fights against and servers Cthon on equal parts. We could say that his allegiance to the Dark God is partial, and he’s not a hero but an anti-hero. And though he has appeared in over a hundred issues accompanying several other great Marvel characters, he is yet to receive a proper reboot of his own series. A lot of wasted potential on this one.
2Nightwatch
Nightwatch was created back in 1993as a response to Image Comic’sSpawn, in an era where competition was hot among comic publishers. This character’s real identity is that of Dr. Kevin Trench, a fellow who became the caped superhero in a singular way: After witnessing he hero die in a fight against a group of terrorists, he unmasked Nightwatch only to discover he was looking at an older version of himself.
In a panic, he took the costume and went to hide on an island, thinking that by avoiding using it and fighting crime he could somehow deny his horrific death. But soon after, destiny came knocking down on his door, when a criminal named Alfredo Morelli washed ashore on his island, and after nursing him back to health, the crook stole part of the Nightwatch costume. Decided to recover it, Dr. Trench went after him and ended up participating in many super hero team-ups before becoming a full-time vigilante. A lesson about how destiny is unavoidable, no matter what we do.
1Hannibal King
Hannibal King was an accomplished private investigator, until during one fateful night, he came across the infamous Deacon Frost during an investigation. That’s right, the very same vampire that killed Blade’s mother and turned him into the Daywalker. But Hannibal King didn’t survive the encounter and what’s more, he was resurrected three days later at the morgue, as one of the unloving.
King, now had to deal with his constant urges while rejecting his supernatural nature. And though being a vampire had its perks and advantages, Hannibal was always put under stress, looking for a way to avoid using his vampiric powers and feeding on rats, blood packs, and corpses. Throughout his career, King teamed up with Dr. Strange, Blade, and was one of the members of the Midnight Sons, and also appeared repeatedly throughout the series. Though the character itself is yet to be rebooted, it was part of Blade’s team in the movieBlade: Trinity, playedby none other than Ryan Reynolds himself.
