Marvel Rivals' closed tests have been very successful, with beta and alpha releases drawing in thousands of players. Despite the growing oversaturation of hero shooters, live services, and the superhero genre,Marvel Rivalshas largely avoided this air of cynicism. While this is mostly down to gameplay that has been well-received by fans, as well as strong art direction, the title also sports an impressive roster. Favorites like Iron Man, Hulk, Spider-Man, and Black Panther are natural fits, but more wildcard picks like Luna Snow and Magik have really helped round out the list.
Jeff The Land Shark Is Joining Marvel Rivals
A couple of new trailers were shown off forMarvel Rivalsat San Diego Comic-Con, with an exceptionally animated cinematic trailer included in the mix. As part of this push, two new characters were revealed for the game, both of whom made their way intoMarvel Rivalson July 27th. Thor was an expected choice, as his absence was really burning a hole in the roster. More surprising, however, was the addition of Jeff the Land Shark. This adorable four-legged fish is a popular figure in meme culture, but many may not know about his origins.
Jeff The Land Shark In Comics
Jeff The Land Shark is an incredibly recent addition to the Marvel canon; he’s especially recent when compared to the veterancharacters found inMarvel Rivals, making his inclusion all the more impressive. He first appeared in the seventh issue ofWest Coast Avengersvol. 3, spawned from the minds of writer Kelly Thompson and artist Daniele Di Nicuolo (with additional inspiration from Stefano Caselli’s drawings of land sharks in issue one of the comic).
The diegetic explanation for Jeff and his fellow land sharks is that they were created by M.O.D.O.K, only for the infant Jeff to be adopted by Gwen Poole. He has subsequently been handed off to Deadpool, Elsa Bloodstone, and later Kate Bishop in his 2021It’s Jeff!comic run. Through all of his antics, from stealing Captain America’s shield to eating the Infinity Gauntlet, one ofJeff the Land Shark’s biggest momentsremains a comic panel where Deadpool entrusts him with the protection of some children. Jeff’s blank stare while holding a knife in his mouth really captured the internet’s heart.
What Jeff Brings To Marvel Rivals
Jeff immediately hadMarvel Rivalsfansgushing, but his abilities will be what determines his staying power. He’s part of the Strategist class, gifted with support powers that compliment his playful personality. He can use a normal attack to unleash an AoE water blast or heal, which synergizes nicely with his Healing Bubble—a power that heals one ally and boosts any further healing they receive. He also has mobility powers with It’s Jeff! and Hide and Seek, both of which will let him burrow underground for greater speed. Oblivious Cuteness helps him with self-preservation, reducing critical hit damage.
Though he’s already poised to be a great boon tootherMarvel Rivalscharacters, he also has team-up abilities on top of these other powers. Just like Namor, Jeff can get himself an icy boost to his toolset with some help from Luna Snow. Moreover, he can join Rocket Raccoon in hitching a ride on Groot’s shoulder. All of this utility is sure to make Jeff, if nothing else, an asset to team play and morale.
