Summary
After taking a break last year,Marvel Studiosis officially heading back to San Diego Comic-Con this year. The news was announced last week, however, little was known what the studio had in store for its Hall H presentation. With promotional images officially going up, we might be able to figure out whatMarvel StudiosPresident Kevin Feige has planned for fans this year.
With numerous projects coming up, including the recently wrappedThunderbolts*andCaptain America: Brave New World, Marvel has plenty to tease for fans. However, there are admittedly some projects fans are eager to hear about more than others, such asFantastic FourandBlade. So, let’s speculate as to what Marvel Studios might bring to the stage later this month.
Realistic Expectations
While Marvel Studios has yet to officially comment regarding its presence at SDCC this year, fans have already begun to spot banners forFantastic Fouraround the convention center. Feige recently confirmed the timeline of the film, and stated filming would take place shortly after comic-con, so it seems likely the cast will make an appearance on stage alongside the film’s director. As to what the studio could potentially show the audience, it is likely Feige will unveil concept art, as well as potentially confirmthe remainder of the cast. The convention is set to take place aroundDeadpool & Wolverine’s release date, so it’s more than likely the studio will promote the film heavily at the convention. As to whether there will be anyDeadpoolnews at SDCC remains to be seen, but with ticket pre-sales already doing big numbers, perhaps we’ll learn whether Shawn Levy is confirmed to directAvengers: Secret Wars. Along withFantastic FourandDeadpool & Wolverine, Marvel Studios has a slew of productions that have wrapped that it can tease for audiences.
Among those projects areThunderbolts*andCaptain America: Brave New World, with the latter having officiallywrapped extensive reshoots recently. Both films are big productions for the studio, and with both having been teased during Marvel’s previous SDCC presentations, it seems likely Feige will pull back the curtain on both films during this year’s Hall H presentation. On the small screen, Marvel has even more to potentially tease, with production having wrapped onIronheart,Agatha All Along,Wonder Man, andDaredevil: Born Again. Those projects seem more likely to be held for Disney’s D23 later this year, however, it’s possible fans will be treated to first looks at SDCC. It’s also possible the studio will finally confirmVision Quest, as well as address the likelihood of second seasons of bothHawkeyeandMs. Marvel.
What Fans Hope to Hear More About
Marvel Studios certainly has its plate full, and there’s only so much the studio can actually address during its Hall H presentation. Given this, there’s sure to be some disappointment among fans if news isn’t revealed about some of the studio’s biggest projects, such asBladeandX-Men.Blade, of course, continues to be pushed back due to behind-the-scenes issues as the studio seeks to course correct the script beforesecuring a third - and final - director. As forX-Men, while the project doesn’t have a director yet, it does have a writer, so it’s possible that the studio will announce a director for the project. Then again, the writer was only announced in May, so it’s hard to believe there’s much to share on that front. Other projects that have been rumored or announced, but have had little momentum, includeYoung Avengers,Armor Wars,Nova,Scarlet Witch,Blonde Phantom,White Tiger, andNamor. Now, some of these projects have been teased for a long time; long before Marvel Studios experienced multiple box office woes that forced the studio to re-evaluate its output. So, it is possible none of these will actually be addressed or announced during SDCC. However,Armor Warshas had a writer for a long time, andYoung Avengershas been teased in other projects, so anything is possible.
When SDCC and D23 fall in the same year for Marvel Studios, Feige usually pushes the small screen stuff for Disney’s D23. This could mean that the Hall H presentation will mainly focus on the films, with a hint of Disney+ content - possiblyDaredevil: Born Again. If this is the case, fans will need to wait until August to hear more about Marvel’s upcoming small screen plans. Either way, fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe have plenty to be excited about over the next month or two. With a handful of films to tease, and a plethora of television shows in varying stages of development, Marvel Studios President Keivin Feige has a ton to tease. As to what he decides to reveal at SDCC, well, that remains to be seen.
Marvel Studios will take the stage at San Diego Comic-Con on Saturday, July 27th.
