Summary

One ofMinecraft’s oldest textures just got a facelift, and some fans aren’t happy about it. The new look given to the redstone torch is only an experiment, but a good fewMinecraftplayers are locked in a bitter argument over whether it should become a permanent change.

The redstone torch isan old bit ofMinecraftredstone, introduced back in 2010 (during the game’s alpha). It’s essential in even the simplest of redstone machines, being a staple in everything from piston doors to complex farms. Though it emits far less light than a traditional torch, its glow is secondary to the constant charge it produces. This constant charge can be switched off, but such requires an additional bit of building when compared to a component like a lever. However, this aspect of remote deactivation is one of its strongest, key to many of its functions.

The New Redstone Torch Has Minecraft Fans Divided

A new cycle of snapshots has begun on Java, both of which have so far focused on a diversity of features. While most fans are preoccupied withthe experimental changes toMinecraft’s minecarts, it’s hard to ignore how the redstone torch has been changed. What once had the texture of a regular torch bordered by red pixels now is a great cube of red, one orbiting a center of white and red. There are many fans that love these changes, but there are more than a couple hesitant to embrace them.

The Pros And Cons Of The New Redstone Torch Design

Fans are often known to fight bitterly over changes, with harsh words being exchanged only a few years ago when the zombie pigman of yore becameMinecraft’s present zombified piglin. Though some might think that the updated netherrack texture is about the only design change fans universally see as a positive, the new redstone torch certainly has its fans. In fact, many spaces see those fans being the majority; many players are simply happy with the redstone torch finally being red at its core. The cube structure of the flame is also a great touch, granting some additional depth.

On the other hand, there are fans who are perturbed by the new texture introduced inthese recentMinecraftsnapshots. Some have pointed out that the design is an inaccurate portrayal of how light works, an argument that has spurred more arguments and many outright rejections on the basis of redstone’s fantastical nature. In fact, the pinkish light within is rejected for many reasons, and embraced for many others. The conflict here perhaps portrays the internal contradiction in the game’s own handling of realism, with Mojang shelving features in recent years (such as fireflies) in the pursuit of such a goal, all whileMinecraftbrims with illogical fantasies.

More Sweeping Changes Could Sway Fans In Favor Of The New Torch

Oddly enough,Minecraft’s new snapshot torch designmight be too restrained in some areas. Though it may be impossible to win over all fans, a step to making the redstone torch a real crowd pleaser would be making it produce red light. Colored light is a realm currently untouched byMinecraft, but it’s something worth thinking about. Making the redstone torch carry such a revolutionary function would no doubt make it the envy of its brethren, changing the game forever.

Making redstone produce red light may be beyond the scope ofevenMinecraft’s most ambitious updates, with something of a lighting overhaul potentially required to pull it off (the way lighting is currently handled in-game is a somewhat unique case in gaming). On the other hand, it’s a long-requested feature that would take the new redstone torch from a controversial, if broadly liked, change to one of the most important in the game’s history.
