In December 2020, the long-awaited video gameCyberpunk 2077was released to very, very mixed reviews. Since the initial problems surrounding the game’s launch, though, the nameCyberpunk 2077has had a total turn-around and recovery. While, of course, a lot of that can be attributed to the hard work of the developers, who have fixed many of the technical issues that initially plagued the game, along withthe success of the DLCPhantom Liberty, there is more to the story.
Another contributing factor to renewed interest inCyberpunk 2077was the success of theNetflixanime seriesCyberpunk: Edgerunnerswhich was based on the game. The anime, which scored 8.3 on IMDb and an impressive 100% according to Rotten Tomatoes, was a huge success. Since its release nearly 2 years ago now in 2022, people have been asking for more. And now, it seems like their wish may be coming true sometime in the future.
Cyberpunk Anime “Defniitely” Being Planned
Edgerunners Season Two Remains Unconfirmed
Cyberpunk 2077is owned by Polish studio CD Projekt, also famous for theWitcherseries of video games. During CD Projekt’s latest earnings call, the Joint CEO Michał Nowakowski was asked if there were plans for more projects in theCyberpunkuniverse. This comes after the team announced thatPhantom Libertywould be the original game’s only DLC, but that a sequel was already in the works. Nowakowshi was also asked if there were any plans specifically for a sequel toCyberpunk: Edgerunners.
As reported byIGN, Nowakowshi responded,
We are definitely planning to do more in terms of animation with Cyberpunk so I hope that’s enough as an answer. So expect to see more for sure, but that’s as far as I can go right now.
After the intial release ofCyberpunk: Edgerunners, despite the anime’s success, Satoru Honma, CD Projekt’s Japanese community manager, said that it was going to be a standalone series. This made sense, considering the ending of the anime was very finite, and continuing on with the same story would potentiallycheapen the emotional conclusion. However, with this statement from Nowakowshi, the internet is speculating if they can expect moreEdgerunnersafter all. Not everyone agrees that the anime does not need a sequel, and some fans are begging for one.
Edgerunnerspremiered on Netflix in September 2022, so the timing of this statement could not be any better. Two years have passed since so many people fell in love with the anime, which even inspirednew elements to be added to theCyberpunk 2077gameto tie the two together even more. Now everyone has been waiting two years for something new, and it seems like they have not been waiting in vain.
What a NewCyberpunkAnime Could Look Like
Plenty of Lore to Build On
Even if there is not going to be a sequel toCyberpunk: Edgerunners, there is still plenty that CD Projekt can do with the game to make a new anime. One idea that may make fans ofEdgerunnershappy would be to make a prequel, exploring the lives of some of the anime’s eccentric charactersbefore they met David. A new anime could also follow one of the side characters in more detail, adding a new depth to the original story.
ButCyberpunk 2077is such a huge game with so much potential that a new animation project could be about something totally new and unrelated toEdgerunners. It could follow a character from the game, for example, especially with so many interesting characters to choose from. Or it could be anotheroriginal story set in Night City or beyond, which has plenty of secrets still waiting to be revealed.
Whatever CD Projekt is planning,Cyberpunkfans are definitely excited by the promise of new animation being on the table. It would be a real waste for the studio not to capitalize on the success ofEdgerunnersand the huge potential thatCyberpunkhas for more stories, after all. While it may be some time before any more information is shared, in the meantime this gives fans something to look forward to, and a promise that something new is definitely on the horizon.
