While it would be sad to watch him leave them behind, Will has felt a bit ignored and abandoned by his friends ever since he returns to Hawkins, Indiana after spending time in the Upside Down, which isan important part of Will’s timeline. He feels that they’ve moved on from childhood faster than he has, and he wishes they could all play games and have fun the way they used to. While it would be sad to see Will no longer spending much time with his friends, this is a somber but often realistic part of growing up, so it would make sense. Will’s happy ending might only be possible if he lives somewhere else and can put this terrifying part of his past behind him. As long as it’s clear that he still cares about his friends and sees them sometimes, this would feel like the right path for his character.
