Summary
Warning: This article contains spoilers from One Piece chapter 1122.
Joy Boy is one of the most influential characters inOne Piece, and at the same time, an individual that Oda is itching to draw more of. Fans always knew that Joy Boy would be incredibly significant in the final stretch ofOne Piece, as his entire story would eventually be revealed to them. Luffy is intrinsically linked to Joy Boy, and that in itself makes him very special. Now thatOne Pieceis in the Final Saga, fans know that they would slowly start seeing more of him.
As things stand, Oda is slowly introducing Joy Boy lore to the story, which makes for a very exciting development in the plot. This is especially true because events circling the Void Century are now being revealed, especially startingwith the Egghead Island Arc.In this arc, fans found out a great deal about Joy Boy and the Void Century, and more importantly, in One Piece chapter 1122, fans also got their first look at the pirate that is Joy Boy.
Joy Boy’s Character Design Is Finally Hinted At By Eiichiro Oda
Joy Boy was always known to be a figure similar to Luffy. The very first silhouette that fans saw of him was from the Fishman Island Arc. Most fans do not recall Joy Boy being shown in this arc, but, officially, his very first appearance was in the Fishman Island arc. This makes total sense, given that Joy Boy was namedropped in the same Arc as well. Back then, it was Queen Otohime who was speaking of Poseidon’s powers, and went on to mention that someonewill come to guide Shirahoshi, as has been prophesized, or otherwise, the power could be used to cause great devastation. This someone was obviously Luffy, and with that, a past silhouette of Joy Boy was shown to the fans here.
Emet, I will store my strongest Haki in you! – Joy Boy
Of Course, this was not Joy Boy’s final design, as, clearly, the design that was revealed to fans in One Piece chapter 1122 is slightly different. In this chapter, fans finally got to see Joy Boy in the flesh, and it was certainly very pleasant for them to see. Clearly,Joy Boy is very similar to Luffy. However, there are key differences. The first thing that fans would notice is that Joy Boy has a peg leg. This likely suggests that Joy Boy was crippled at some point. Perhaps, this was a result of one of the battles that he fought, or, it could have been a disability that he was born with. Either way, what fans know is the Joy Boy does not have a leg.
Fans have assumed that Joy Boy has a wooden leg, however, that is likely not going to be the case. It must be remembered that Joy Boy is from the most advanced kingdom, scientifically speaking. This means that whatever replacement he has for his leg is likely an advanced piece of technology that aids him greatly in battle.
At the same time, Joy Boy also has an arm missing. One of Joy Boy’s hands appears to be a robotic hand. Clearly, fans did not get to see his hand properly, given that he was still in a silhouette, but, it was clear that the hand is a robotic one. How exactly Joy Boy lost his hand remains unknown. In this case, however, it is likely that this was a result of some battle that he fought. Once again, fans might think that Joy Boy simply has a hook for a hand, which would be fitting for a pirate, but, it is likely that this is more than just that. The best guess would be that Joy Boy actually has some scientific tool attached to his arm which he can utilize and combat greatly to fight and fend off his enemies. Other than these two features, Joy Boy looks starkly similar to Luffy. He was seen wearing a cape in the chapter, similar to how Luffy wore one during the Onigashima raid of One Piece. He also wore the signature Straw Hat, which fans know Luffy to carry as well.
Oda’s Pirate With An Eye Patch Could Be Joy Boy
Joy Boy Having A Design Similar To A Stereotypical Could Mean He Has An Eye Patch
Given that Joy Boy is a pirate with a peg leg and something similar to a hook, fans know that there is more to him than just that. Oda has not revealed his face to the fans, but given that he has already showcased him to be very similar to the stereotypical pirate, which is, missing a leg and having a hook for a hand, the next logical step would be that Joy Boy is a pirate wearing an eye patch as well. This might surprise some fans and others might outright refuse the idea.
However, the chances of this being true are very high. This is simply because back in the day, Oda mentioned that he was itching to draw a pirate with an eye patch. According to Oda, this character would show up in the final stretch of One Piece, and now, it might be time for him to show up in the manga.
A pirate with an eye patch will appear in the final phase ofOne Piece. I’m itching to draw that character as soon as possible. Maybe people have a preconception that many pirates wear eye patches, but actually I’ve never drawn any pirates with eye patches.
One Piece chapter 1122 kept the face of Joy Boy completely hidden, and, because of that, fans couldn’t clearly tell whetherJoy Boy had an eyepatchor not. However, eventually, Joy Boy’s face will be revealed, and fans will clearly get to see whether he will have an eye patch or not. This would make perfect sense based on the stereotypical character design that Oda has carved out for Joy Boy, and it would certainly make him more interesting as well.
Joy Boy’s Size Implies His Race As Well
Joy Boy Could Be A Buccaneer
Another thing that not many fans would have noticed inOne Piecechapter 1122 is Joy Boy’s size. From a distance,it might appear as if Joy Boy is a normal-sized human. However, that is likely not the case. Fans must remember that the scale that he is being put up against is Emet, the Iron Giant. The Iron Giant is of the same size as an ancient giant, or even bigger. This means that Emet towers over 60 m. When compared to the Iron Giant, Joy Boy certainly isn’t that small. Of course, he would still not be bigger than his head, but, that certainly is not human size. It is highly likely that Joy Boy is from a special race of the One Piece World, such as that of the Buccaneer.
Either that, or Joy Boy is just an abnormally large human, which wouldn’t be a stretch either. Fans have seen the likes of the Admirals be tremendously tall despite being just humans. Joy Boy could be a similar individual, and it does appear that his size is much greater than that of Luffy’s. For now, fans don’t know much about Joy Boy’s race, but, eventually, they will certainly find out more about this individual.
One Piece is available to read via Viz Media. The series can be read by the fans officially and for free on the Shonen Jump and theManga Plusapp. The release date for the next chapter of One Piece, One Piece 1123, is set to be July 07, 2025.
